1. What is Underbody coating?

 

• Underbody coating is a process of spraying an anti-corrosive compound materials to the underneath of the vehicles body is known as underbody coating.

• This underbody coating helps in providing a long-term protection from corrosion and rust underneath the vehicle body such that it covers running boards, frames, rails, body panels, cavities which cannot be seen, but they can be exposed to corrosion.

• During road trips, due to poor road conditions the rocks are thrown out from the tires towards the underbody, which leads to denting of the metal and piercing of metal. When these dented surfaces are splashed with road salts and water, they tend to results in decaying the surfaces of the underbody through rust and corrosion.

• Rust protection and underbody coating is almost same to same, but the only difference that separates them is.the rust protection is applied from interior of car whereas underbody coating is applied from exterior of car.

Deep cleaning:It a process of cleaning of underbody parts thoroughly using water.

Degreasing:it is process of removing grease and dirt particles from the surface and panels.

Applying sealant:it is process of Spraying the sealant.

Inspection and recoating: it is a process of making sure wheather the sealant has applied clearly.

2.Types of Underbody coating:

 

1. Rubberized underbody coating:

Rubberized underbody coating helps in preventing the corrosion, dust, moisture, rust, dents and also provide sound cushioning effect, which is occurring from vehicle body underneath. This coating can also be applied at various regions of underbody such as wheel arches, quarter panels underbody.it can also easily removed from the body using underbody coating removal spray.

2. Polyurethane underbody coating:

Polyurethane is a type of underbody coating which can be applied easily and faster. This underbody coating helps in seeping into all cracks and seams by moving salt and moisture content accumulated in it and closing the rusty areas to blend and bond with unoxidized metal. This polyurethane coating needs to be applied on the body after the proper sanding of underbody.

3. Wax/Paraffin based underbody coating:

Paraffin based underbody coating is a form of sealant, where they tend to drip or flow towards the cracks and seams in underbody and fill within them in order to provide protective properties.it is also known for quickest and cheapest form of underbody coating available in the market. And also, it may wear-off easily over the period of time.

4. Alpha based underbody coating:

It is a type of underbody coating sealant, which offers an extra life against the corrosion, chipping and rock dentings. most of the trucks, all-terrain vehicles, cars and heavy machineries are coated with this underbody sealant, which is due to its wide properties. This coating takes more time for curing process, and it costs twice as the normal underbody sealant.

 

   3. Advantages of Underbody coating:

1. Helps in reducing the noise travelling from the underneath of car.
2. It tends to insulate the interior of the car from various climate conditions.
3. It exhibits anti-chipping property, which reduce rust generation.
4. Increase the life of vehicle.
5. It can be self-applied.
6. Since the underbody coating will have smoother surface after coating, that helps in reducing the rigid contact between dust particles and body surfaces.
7. The sealant tends to create an airlock underbody, that is it helps in closing the small pores and holes under the body through filling them.

 

   4. Dis-Advantages of Underbody coating:

1. Cost varies based on the quality of product.
2. Undercoat doesn’t work or fix the problems, if they are applied on non-cleaned surfaces.
3. Oil-based undercoating needs to be re-applied frequently.
4. It tends to increase the vehicle weight slightly.
5. Underbody coating life depends on road trip followed and path that may damage underbody.
