Underbody Coating
Underbody Coating
Why underbody coating?
Research results show that with the help of underbody coating the life of a car is improved around 50%. The Human race has evolved to become competent enough to protect itself from the harshness of various weather conditions. Especially during monsoon due to heavy rains there is a lot of water left on the roads which might probably effect the underbody coating of the cars. This makes them prone to corrosion in the underbody region.
The underbody coating mainly divided into 5 processes.
- Pre-Treatment
- Electrodeposition
- Sealant application
- Primer application
- Top coat
Pre-treatment: The main aim of the pre-treatment process is to clean the BIW by removing the oils left after the stamping and welding processes. It is done by dipping the BIW into the degreasing solution. The dipping is also maintained in a specified manner in which the entire body gets cleaned and also to remove the entire degreasing solution from the body. It is done in a way that the dipping angles and time is also defined in order get the entire body cleaned. And the degreasing solution consists of alkaline salts, tri-sodium phosphate, caustic soda and surfactants.
Electron deposition of the anti-corrosion or rust prevention.
Sealant application: It is the process of applying sealants like PVC and Urethane to the entire body.
Primer application: The fourth step is to apply primer. There are various primer like water borne, solvent borne and powder. These are used to increase adhesion between Electron coating and top coating. The primer provides chipping protection, improves the paint appearance. It is also compatible with emission regulations.
Top coat: The top coat is further divided into two coats a base coat and a clear coat. The main agenda of base coat is to apply colour pigment, whereas in the clear coat the protective layer is applied which is against corrosion and also provides smooth and even finishing.
There are also different types of underbody coating.
- Rubberised undercoating
- Asphalt-based undercoating
- Polyurethane undercoating
- Wax or paraffin based under coating.
Advantages of Underbody coating
Protects against Rust and Corrosion
The primary objective of getting underbody coating done is preventing metal components that are exposed on the bottom side of the car to damage from corrosion. You can shut out the adverse effects of corrosion on your car by simply applying a rubberised anti-rust coating all over the belly of your car.
Reduces NVH (Noise Vibration Harshness) levels
The underbody coating’s consistency is so thick that the layer it creates absorbs all the unpleasant noises and vibrations and marginally improves the driving experience.
Prevents Paint Chipping
While traveling in uneven surfaces or maintain regions, you will often encounter sharp gravel or any other unattended object hitting the belly of your car with high momentum. This scrapes and chips off the metal from down below. A thick layer of Underbody Coating definitely comes to aid and minimises the effects of such contacts on the body.
Heat Insulation
It insulates the car from high temperatures released from beneath the car.
