Fender Design Challenge
Fender Design
Objective
To design the mounts of the fender
Fender design
- Primary purpose of the fender is to avoid mud, rocks and other particles thrown in to air due to the rotation of the wheel.
- Fender prevents the pedestrians as well as engine components from those particles.
- Front fenders are usually designed individually where as rare fender is accommodated in body side structure.
Types of Fender

Fig Types of fender
- Now a days the full bumper type is not using in order to reduce the material as it requires bigger blank size and also there is a lot of scrap in full bumper.
- Whereas for the half bumper we can reduce a lot of scrap and we can prepare to fender from one blank just by increasing small amount of blank size.
- Also in the half bumper plastics are used to reduce the weight of the component.
Fender have 5 main mount attachments
- Drip area mount
- A pillar mount
- Baffle mount
- Sill mount
- Bumper mount.
Design considerations for the fender design for drip area
- First and main consideration was 150mm gap from the front end of the drip to bumper for headlamps
- 200mm from the rear end is kept for the wiper motor assembly. I should not be more than 300mm.
- As the engine components should not be visible outside initially 30 angle and 9mm length is given.
- The depth should be in the range of 40 to 60mm, if the depth increases further the spring back effect will also increases.
- Embosses are given to increase the strength.
