Underbody Coating
Coating Process:
Coating means the protection of base material life by adding/applying additional material which will not react to external particles and protecting base material to react to any external chemical reaction and keep base material properties stable.
In simple words keep base material safe from outer particles and increase the life of base metal. The coating prevents the base material to react to outside elements and chemical reactions.
Coating in the automobile sector.
The automobile sector uses base materials having strong, durability, long life, and durability to deliver long life to their vehicles. Mainly steel, aluminium, and magnesium are used while manufacturing vehicles. These materials have good properties in their purest form time their alloys are also used to deliver good mechanical properties. If these materials are used in the purest form they may perform well for a short period of time but in automobiles, we cannot consider short-life material to achieve structural stability and open to react to outer particles minimising human safety and life.
To maintain the long life of materials with their original good mechanical properties we have to improve material life and protect them from outer elements reacting to the base metal. We can simply apply a coating to the base material by various methods to avoid damage.
Main Types Of Coating Process-
- Vapour Deposition
- Physical vapour deposition
- Chemical coating
- Electrical charge coating
Coating Properties
- Water resistance
The water resistance property is the main property of the coating
- Self-adhesive
The coating should be very adhesive property to stick to material to integrate base material life.
- Proper chemical resistance
The proper chemical resistance property of coating will protect material from external chemical particles to avoid damage to the material.
- Weather resistance
Should be compatible with changing weather and sustain.
- Easy to apply
Should easily adopt by workers.
The time many coating processes has been developed and used in many manufacturing processes to improvise base material thickness.
In the Automobile industry, there are many types of vehicle models and structures for various transportation purposes. The automobile sector is a vast and mass production facility so to adopt fast and full-body coating of vehicle body there are only a few coating techniques adopted by automobile manufacturers.
The coating Process Adopted by Automobile Industries vehicles is used for at least 15 years, to give the main body life of 15 years we have to increase the life of the material used in the vehicle. To achieve material life protection from natural/unnatural occurrences of moisture we have to cover it by adding an extra thin layer of coating. To keep moisture away from the material. For such practical manufacturers give a protective coating while the manufacturing process.
Area of application in automobile
- Exposed surface
- Exposed to ground
- Interior of vehicle
- operational area
UNDERBODY COATING - exposed to ground
Underbody coating is the most important part of automobile manufacturers to keep body structure sturdy & strong to support all other parts vehicle.
The underbody of vehicles exposed to the ground ( rainwater, small stones, etc) continues exposed to the underbody of vehicles. To ensure the ground residuals will not harm to the underbody And keep the vehicle structure's integrity intact.
Advantages Of underbody coating
- Protect underbody structure from unwanted particles contact to base material and which can harm structures properties
- Additional life to materials of the vehicle body.
- Reduce unwanted rusting.
- Reduce vibration of the body.
- Keep all parts intact
- Reduce noise vibrations harshness level
Underbody coating types.
- Acrylics
- Alkyds
- Bituminous
- Chlorinated rubbers
- Epoxy amine
- Epoxy coal tar
- Epoxy phenolic
- Epoxy polyamide
- Epoxy Ester
- Inorganic And Organic Zinc
- Silicones
- Acrylics
Acrylics have excellent colour and gloss retention for outdoor Applications And are often combined with other resins because of these properties. They are ideal for use in areas of mild chemical fumes but are not recommended for tank linings.
- Alkyds
Alkyds Are usually natural oils that have been chemically modified to improve the rate of cure chemical resistance and hardness. They are general-purpose coatings designed for applications to a wide range of substrates.
- Bituminous
Bituminous Materials are dark brown or black, semi-solid or liquid thermoplastic mixtures of hydrocarbons derived from the natural or synthetic processes in which hydrocarbon mixtures have lost their volatile components leaving a denser residue. Natural bitumens come from exposed and weathers petroleum and rock deposits.
- Chlorinated rubbers
Chlorinated rubbers Are non-flammable white powder chemical substance that is formed by reacting carbon tetrachloride with chlorine. It has increased hardness and decreased reactivity with most chemicals, making it ideal for use as a protective barrier against corrosion on metal surfaces.
- Epoxy amine
An Amine Cures epoxy coating is an epoxy coating where an anime-based hardener was used in the curation process in the most general sense these epoxy coatings are described on the molecular level as having anime and alcohol functional groups formed during the curing of four classes of amine hardeners are available.
- Epoxy coal tar
Coal tar epoxy consists of epoxy resins and coal tar. It is a type of polymer used to coat surfaces and protect them from corrosive environments. It is primarily used on metal and concrete in tough settings like industrial and offshore operations.
- Epoxy phenolic
The epoxy phenolic coating is a polyamine-cured paint that has excellent resistance against solvents, chemicals, acids, and bases. It can be used as a protective coating for steel structures where chemical resistance and heat resistance up to 180 c is required.
- Epoxy polyamide
A polyamide epoxy is a polymer that employs a polyamide resin as a curing agent. A polyamide in epoxy is essentially an organic compound very similar to ammonia but has had one of its hydrogen atoms replaced with another atom. A polyamide epoxy is commonly used as a coating or an adhesive.
- Epoxy Ester
Epoxy Esters are synthetic chemical substances that are used as corrosion inhibitors on metallic surfaces. They are polymer based and typically in the form of adhesives or paints. They can be found in coatings, resins and a wide range of other substances used to prevent corrosion.
- Inorganic and organic zinc
Organic coatings are often liquid or powder paints that require several layers before a thick enough coating is achieved to inhibit corrosion. The coating must be dense and durable. These coatings are based on carbon-containing materials normally derived from refined and/or modified petroleum products as well as different solvents/water, pigments, additives and filters.
Inorganic coatings encompass surface conversion, anodizing, enamelling, metallic coatings and more. These coatings are created through a chemical action that changes the surface layer of metal into a metallic oxide film or compound to reduce corrosion.
- Silicon
Silicon sealant is a product resistant to moisture, chemicals and outdoor weather conditions it has high adhesion strength, it stands out with its permanent flexibility,. It maintains its flexibility at low and high temperatures. It can be used in pieces that will be exposed to direct water, it does not cause shrinkage. It is resistant to mood formation.

Conclusion:
Underbody coating may cost but it will protect from rusting vehicle parts, and give prolonged life to your vehicle. Underbody coating comes with stock but we can do it after the market as per the end user's geometric situation, and location.
The especially seaside city should do underbody coating after purchasing a vehicle. Ex Mumbai, Chennai, Visakhapatnam.
