Challenge

To calculate dead and live load for industrial steel structures and to apply them using TSD

1)

Aim - To calculate dead load in design report based on IS code and apply dead load on the model

Procedure -

Dead load = 1.2 kn/m^2

Finishes = 0.05*24 = 1.2 kn/m^2

Ceiling load = 0.3 kn/m^2

Roof load = 1.5 kn/m^2

Brick wall load -

1) Ground to Intermediate floor = 0.15*20*5.2 = 15.6 kn/m^2

2) Intermediate to Roof floor = 0.15*20*6.8 = 20.4 kn/m^2

3) Roof to Top floor = 0.15*20*4.8 = 14.4 kn/m^2

Step 1 -

  • Open Tekla structural designer software and open the week 3 file
  • Using model tab select slabs on beam option
  • And add slabs to each floor

Step 2 -

  • Now add loads using load cases option in load tab
  • We will get new window and add the required load in this window

Step 3 -

  • Now go to load tab and select combinations
  • We will get new window and add required combinations
  • Then select the levels where we need to apply the load

Step 4 -

  • Under load tab select the area to apply load on slab

  • 3D view -

Step 5 -

  • Under load tab select UDL applied on the brick wall
  • Apply load on Roof

Result -

Hence,we completed calculations of dead load using IS code.

2)

Aim - To calculate live load in design report based on IS code and apply live load on the model

Live load as per IS 875 -

Equipment room = 5 kn/m^2

Workshop = 5 kn/m^2

Staircase = 5 kn/m^2

Administration room = 5 kn/m^2

Store room = 5 kn/m^2

Meeting room = 5 kn/m^2

Conference room = 5 kn/m^2

Toilet = 2 kn/m^2

Rest room = 2 kn/m^2

Office room = 3 kn/m^2

Procedure -

  • Select the levels where we want to apply the loads
  • Using load tab select the area option to apply load on slab
  • Now we can see the area load applied on the slab

Ground floor -

Intermediate floor -

Roof floor -

Result -

Hence,we have calculated live load using IS code.

3)

Aim - To generate a calculation for 5T crane loading based on following inputs

Given data -

Centre to centre span of the wheel = 10m

Weight of crab = 40kn

Number of wheels = 4

Wheel base = 2m

Crane capacity = 50kn

Weight of trolley = 10 kn

Minimum hook approach = 1m

Maximum point load on crane -

= Crane capacity + Weight of trolley

= 50 + 10

= 60 kn

UDL = Self weight of crane / Distance between rails

= 40 / 14

= 2.89 kn/m

Moment at A -

Sigma MA = 0

60*1-14RB-2.89*14/2=0

RB = 24.5 kn

Sigma Fy = 0

RA-RB-60-2.89*14=0

RA = 75.9 kn

Now,assume total self weight of girder = 1.5 kn/m^2

Factored load = 1.5*1.5 = 2.25 kn/m^2

Load on each wheel = 75.9/2 = 37.95kn

Factored load = 37.95*1.5 =57 kn

Moment at C -

Sigma MC = 0

6RD= 2.25*6*3-57*4.5+57*2.5

RD = 73.25 kn

Sigma Fy = 0

RC =RD =57=57=2.25*6

RC = 54.25 kn

Maximum shear force -

Sigma MF = 0

6RE-57*6-57*4-2.25*6*3=0

RE = 101.75 kn

V = WL/2=1.5*6/2 = 4.5 kn

Impact load - 10% of wheel load = 10/100* 101.75 = 10.175 kn

Maximum shear force = 10.175+101.75+4.5 = 116.425 kn

Lateral load analysis = 5% of total weight = 5/100* 60 = 3 kn
