Static analysis on two models of the plate with holes

AIM: Perform a static analysis on two models of the plate with holes.

Model 1:

Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the centre:
Diameter=60mm

Model 2:

Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the centre:
Diameter=60mm

Two holes of 30 mm diameter which are placed 90mm away from the central hole on both sides.

Boundary Conditions:

Material: Alloy Steel

Force: 1000N (Tensile)

Results:

For Plate 1:

Stress:

Deformation:

Strain:

For Plate 2:

Stress:

Deformation:

Strain:

Conclusion:

The above results show that the increase in the number of holes reduces stress. The stress concentration can also be reduced by

  • Avoiding the sharp edges
  • Filleting the edges and with larger fillet diameter.

- By considering the first case, Where the plate having only one hole at the centre. The stress concentration across that section is more and hence the maximum stress is induced on that section. Also, the chances of rupture are increased when continuous loading is applied to that section.

- By considering the second case there is a reduction of stress concentration by the two holes at the sides of a bigger hole.

- The result value obtained as, Total Deformation of 0.000567mm which is slightly bigger than the deformation in the first case .i.e, 0.000524 mm

- Also, the stress is reduced in the second case by a small amount. ie, 1.162e6 N/sq.m , while in first case having a stress generation of 1.209e6 N/sq.m.

- This reduction in stress value is due to the holes provided in the section/plate. The Two holes provided on sides of the bigger hole reducing the stress concentration near the centre plane of the bigger hole.
