Sketch a G+1 residential plan according to Vaastu Shastra and Calculation of Loads as per IS code

Aim: To sketch a plan of G+1 floor residential building according to Vastu Shahstra and listing down the names of the structural drawings required to be provided to the construction site.

Inroduction to Vastu Shastra:-

Vastu Shahstra:-

  • Vastu Shahstra is an ancient Indian Science of architecture and acts as a guideline to design your home in a way that enhances positive energy.
  • Our nature is abundant with powerhouses of energy sources like the Sun, Wind, Moon, Water, Earth and Fire.
  • Effect of sunrays, flow of winds, pull of earth's magnetic field and other such cosmic energies utilise properly to enhance the positive energy at home.
  • A good home needs to radiate the right kind of energy.
  • A person dwelling in a house comes under the influence of a specific energy field.
  • Archietectural changes are not possible for a ready to move in house.

Significance of Eight Directions:

  • Four cardinal directions are North, South, East and West.
  • Four inter cardinal directions are North-east, North-west, South-east and South-west.
  • Each direction signifies an aspect of life and is governed by various gods as per Vastu Shashtra.
  • North-Wealth
  • South- Dharma
  • West and East- Overall properity.

Basic Principles of Vastu Shashtra:

  • Shape: Rooms should be preferably be square or rectangular in shape.
  • Room basics: Rooms should be airy, well lit, bright and clean.
  • Home Center: Center of the house should be an empty space.
  • Staircase and Furniture: Heavy furniture shuld be kept in the south-west direction.
  • Water: Avoid keeping plants and water features in the bedroom.
  • Dinning Table: Dinning space should be near the kitchen and not near the main door.
  • Mirror Placement:Mirror facing the bed is strictly not allowed, mirrors in the bedroom need to be placed in such a way that the bed cannot be seen.

Auspisicious Directions as per Vastu Shashtra:

  • Kitchen: South-east is the best direction for the kitchen. North-east should be avoided.
  • Staircase: South-wet is the best direction for the stairs. North-east should be avoided.
  • Toilet:North-west is the best direction for toilet. North-east should be avoided.
  • Master Bedroom: South-west is the best direction for the master bedroom.
  • Guest Room: North west is the best direction for guest bedroom.
  • Living Room: North west is the best direction for the living room.
  • Undergorund tanks: North east is the best. South-west to be avoided.

Procedure:

The sketch for the proposed ground floor plan is as under:

Dimensions of Ground floor Plan:

Drawing/Living Room = 4.76 m x 3.80 m

Dinning Room = 4.50 m x 3.50 m

Bed Room = 4.50 m x 4.00 m

Store Room = 3.50 m x 2.80

Wash Room = 2.50 m x 3.50 m

Guest Room = 4.20 m x 3.30 m

Kitchen = 3.20 m x 3.80 m

Parking Area = 6.23 m x 3.50 m

Pooja Room = 2.80 m x 3.50 m

Sketch of first floor plan:

The sketch for the proposed first floor plan is as under

Dimesions for the First Floor Plan are as under:

Bedroom1 = 4.50 m x 4.00

Toilet = 3.50 m x 2.50 m

Study Room = 3.00 m x 3.30 m

Bedroom2 = 4.00 m x 3.50 m

Terrace = 13.69 m x 4.00 m

Other Dimensions:

Thickness of the External/Internal Wall: 0.23 m (230 mm)

Thickness of the slab: 0.25 m (250 mm)

Dimension of the column: 0.3 m x 0.3 m (300 mm x 300 mm)

Dimensions of beam: 0.3 m x 0.45 m (300 mm x 450 mm)

Height of the wall of ground floor: 4.00 m

Height of the wall of first floor: 3.5 m

Calculation of Loads:

1. Dead Load Calculation

A. Dead Load for Columns

Dimension of Column: 0.3 m x 0.3 m (300 mm x 300 mm)

Height of Column: (Slab Thickness x 2) + Height of the wall for ground floor + Height of the column for first floor

= (0.25 x 2) + 4 + 3.5 = 8.00 m

= Total Volume of one column= 0.3 x 0.3 x 8.00

= 0.72 `m^3`

= Unit Weight of the RCC = 25 KN/`m^3` (as conforming to IS 875: Part-1)

= Dead Load of One Column = Volume of Column x Unit weight of RCC

= 0.72 x 25

=18 KN

B. Dead Load for Beams:

Dimensions for a beam= 0.3 m x 0.45 m (300 mm x 450 mm)

Total Volume of Beam per meter length = 0.3 x 0.45 x 1

= 0.135`m^3`

= Unit Weight of the RCC = 25 KN/`m^3` (as conforming to IS 875: Part-1)

= Dead Load of Beam per unit meter length= 25 x 0.135

= 3.375 KN

C. Dead Load of Slabs

Slab is always designed for the span of 1`m^2`. Hence, assume the size of the slab as 1m x 1m.

Thickness of the Slab= 0.25 m (250 mm)

= Unit Weight of the RCC = 25 KN/`m^3` (as conforming to IS 875: Part-1)

Total Volume of Slab per Sq. meter span area = 1m x 1m x 0.25 m

= 0.25`m^3`

=Dead Load of slab per Sq. m span area= 0.25 x 0.25

= 6.25 KN

D. Dead Load of Walls

Thickness of external/internal wall= 0.23 m (230 mm)

= Unit Weight of the Masonry = 20 KN/`m^3` (as conforming to IS 875: Part-1)

= Height of the Ground Floor Wall = 4.00 m

= Dead Load of Ground floor wall per unit meter Length= Volume of wall per meter length x Unit weight of Brick Masonry

= 4 x 0.23 x 1 x 20

= 18.4 KN

= Height of first floor wall = 3.5

= Dead Load of Ground floor wall per unit meter Length= Volume of wall per meter length x Unit weight of Brick Masonry

= 3.5 x 0.23 x 1 x 20

= 16.1 KN

Total Weight of both Ground and First Floor Walls per unit meter Length = 18.4 + 16.1 = 34.5 KN

2. Live Load Calculation:-

As per IS - 875, Part-2, for residential building, Live Loads are taken as:

  • Living/Dining - 2 KN/`m^2`
  • Kitchen - 2 KN/`m^2`
  • Bedroom - 2 KN/`m^2`
  • Wash Room - 2 KN/`m^2`
  • Toilet - 2 KN/`m^2`
  • Store Room - 2 KN/`m^2`
  • Terrace - 3 KN/`m^2`
  • Staircase - 3 KN/`m^2`

3. Wind Load Calculation:-

  • If the height of the building is more than 10 meter then building need to be designed for wind load.
  • But, in this case, Height of the building is 8.00 meter. Thus, Wind Load need to be considered.

The names of the structural drawings required to be provided to the site for construction are:-

  1. Center line drawing.
  2. Footing and column layout with reinforcement details.
  3. Column schedule with reinforcement details.
