Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Question

Use the Section from your Hood design and calculate the Section Modulus using the formula S = I/y Where, S = Section Modulus, I = Moment of Inertia, y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.

Come up with a new section that has an improved Section Modulus compared to the previous one and mention what changes you made which resulted in the increased strength.

Section Modulus

Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section. It is a direct measure of the strengthfor a given cross-section. A cross-section that has a larger section modulus will be stronger and capable of supporting greater loads.

The ratio of Moment of Inertia of the cross-section about the neutral axis to the distance of extreme fiber from the neutral axis. It is denoted by symbol S. The section modulus is defined as S = I/y, Where S = Section Modulus, I = Moment of Inertia, y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.

Moment of Inertia (I)

Moment of Inertia is a measure of an object’s resistance to any changes in its angular acceleration. It is defined as a body's tendency to resist angular acceleration, which is the sum of the products of the mass of each particle in the body with the square of its distance from the axis of rotation. I = mr2 where m= Mass in Kg and r is distance.

Case Study 1

Calculation of Section modulus (Z) of the Hood with no off section.

IMax 1 = 8.214956922*105 mm4

IMin 1 = 6.297511333*103 mm4

Y = 238.775 mm

S1 = 26.374 mm3

Case Study 2

Calculation of Section modulus (Z) of the Hood by offsetting inner panel by 0.5 mm.

IMax 2 = 8.17621648*105 mm4

IMin 2 = 6.525586391*103 mm4

Y = 238.775 mm

S2 = 27.329 mm3

Conclusion

As we Know that Section Modulus is a direct measure of the strength for a given cross-section. We can see the Slight Changes in the Section Modulus S2 by comparing S1 and S2. Therefore, we can increase the hood's strength by increasing its cross section.
