Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS
The section modulus of the cross-sectional shape is of significant importance in designing hood. It is a direct measure of the strength of the hood. A hood that has a larger section modulus than another will be stronger and capable of supporting greater loads.
Section modulus formula S = I/y
S = Section Modulus
I = Moment of Inertia
y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object
MOMENT OF INERTIA:
The second moment of area, also known as the area moment of inertia, is a geometrical property of an area that reflects how its points are distributed with regard to an arbitrary axis. If the piece is thin, however, the mass moment of inertia equals the area density times the area moment of inertia.

The distance between the two extreme ends of the section is two times the 'Y' value.
