Section Modulus calculation and optimization

SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION AND OPTIMIZATION

OBJECTIVE:-

Section from hood design challenge is to be evaluated for section modulus.

THEORY:-

It is defined as the ratio of the moment of inertia of a section about its centroidal axis and to the distance of the extreme layer from the neutral axis.

The formula for calculating section modulus is as follows:-

S = I/y

Where,

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

FINDINGS:-

INITIAL CASE

The section modulus is being calculated for the hood design in nx cad.

Fig shows:-The section modulus results in the initial case.

CALCULATIONS:-

Here the minimum moment of inertia, I = 1.539840280e+04 [mm^4]

The distance between the neutral axis and extreme end of the object, Y = 440.7 mm

Therefore the Section Modulus, S = I/Y

S =1.539840280e+04 [mm^4] / 440.7 [mm]

= 34.94 [mm^3]

AFTER OPTIMIZATION

The section modulus is being calculated for the modified hood design in nx cad.

The distance between the outer panel and the inner panel is increased by 2 mm in this case.

Fig shows:-The section modulus results after increasing the distance between the inner panel and the outer panel.

because of the increment in dimension between the inner panel and the outer panel the section modulus is improved.

CALCULATIONS:-

Here the minimum moment of inertia, I = 1.633310006e+04 [mm^4]

The distance between the neutral axis and extreme end of the object, Y = 440.7 mm

Therefore the Section Modulus, S = I/Y

S =1.633310006e+04 [mm^4] / 440.7 [mm]

= 37.06 [mm^3]

CONCLUSION

In this study, we calculated the moment of inertia for the hood design and got to know how to optimize the section for an improved moment of inertia.
