Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Report – Hood Section Modulus Calculation:
Created section of existing hood assembly for SECTION INERTIA ANALYSIS. Required hood inner panel and Outer panel for section inertia analysis, Balance components are hidden from the assembly file.
Created a datum plane at middle of HOOD ASSEMBLY. Thickened part of both inner and outer panel set for creating section at selected datum plane.
Initiated sketch, with respect to created datum. Selected INTERSECTION CURVE, for creating line section of selected region. Need to ensure that, SELECTION SCOPE should be available with ENTIRE ASSEMBLY. Selected both Outer panel and inner panel as SET 1 Face. After that selected the DATUM PLANE, which is perpendicular to both panels. By applying ok, a line section has created at that particular plane.
Hide both panels to get clear visibility od section.

A section like above mentioned, will be created, and this section can’t be edited directly because it will as a single diagram. Need to delete inner part of HOOD OUTER PANEL and inner part of HOOD INNER PANEL. And to be joined, to create a closed structure.
For that, a copy of this section to be projected in datum plane. By using 2D Project curve, the same section has been project, and created a closed structure.

Selection inertia analysis can be calculated using SECTION INERTIA ANALYSIS option. It will show you Minimum and Maximum moment of inertia. And section modulus can be calculated.

S=l/y
Where, S= Section Modulus
L= Moment of Inertia
Y= distance between neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.
To get better SECTION MODULUS, either Moment of inertia(L) to be increased or Distance to be decreased(Y)
Decreasing distance(Y) is not possible because the length should be match with parent car component. Need to be focused to increase moment of inertia(L). Moment of inertia of a body is depends on area of body, where force or load act.
By changing the Emboss location and dimension. Section area can be increased. Eventually Moment of inertia will be raised.

Both Hood designs are enclosed with this report as attachment.
