Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION AND OPTIMIZATION
Section properties are vital in structural analysis and design which is efficient to increase the load bearing capacity by optimizing the shape of the section.
Section modulus:
- the ratio of total moment resisted by the section to the stress in the extreme fiber.
- It gives us an idea of how much load the given structure can take.
- If the section modulus increases and hence its load-bearing capacity.
The formula used to find section modulus:
S = I/y
Whereas,
S = Section Modulus
I = Moment of Inertia
y = distance between the neutral axis and the end of the object
INPUT:
The Hood Panel BIW is taken as the input and the Section Modulus is calculated based on three conditions.

Model 1:
The Hood Inner and Outer Panel have a thickness of 0.75mm and the sectional area has embossing along the cross-section.
From the above condition, the section modulus is calculated by obtaining the Moment of Inertia in NX using Section Inertia Analysis.

Section Inertia Analysis Report:
The Maximum and minimum moment of inertia obtained are
Imax =
=
Imin =
Imin =
y= 485mm
The Section modulus is calculated using (1)
S = I/y
Smax =
Smin =
Model 2:
The Emboss defined in the inner panel are removed which reduces the sectional area and the values are obtained below

THE HOOD WITHOUT EMBOSSES
Section Inertia Analysis Report:
The Maximum and minimum moment of inertia obtained are
Imax =
Imin =
y= 485mm
The Section modulus is calculated using (1)
S = I/y
Smax =
Smin =
CONCLUSION:
Thus, Section Modulus carried out on BIW Structures provide better understanding of the Load bearing capacity, bending resistance and forces and stress exerted in the beam and has wider significance of reducing the weight and cost for Automotive OEM's.
