Section Modulus calculation and optimization

SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION AND OPTIMIZATION

STATEMENT-

  1. Determine the Section Modulus of the Designed Hood.
  2. Create a new design with an improved section modulus .

SECTION MODULUS

  • Section Modulus is a geometrical properties.
  • Main Defination of section modulus is How much load we can apply to our body it not be faill.
  • Section Modulus is a direct measure of strength of any sectional area of an object about an reference axis(neutral axis). reference axis is a neutral axis where be load defined on body.
  • Section modulus direct releated with the strength.
  • Strength is nothing but capable of supporting greater loads , so higher the strength it has a high capable of supprting greater loads.
  • formula of section Modulus- It may be defined as the ratio of total moment resisted by the section to the stress in the extreme fiber which is equal to yield stress.

SECTION MODULUS S = I/Y

SECTION MODULUS represented by symbol of ''S''

where I= moment of inertia (min)

Y=is the distance from the reference line (neutral axis )to one of the extreme end of an object.

  • Moment Of Inertia is nothing but offering resustance against of moment, bending or twisting, if we applied any extrnal load on the body, how much resistance its offering to tend to deform.

Same Principle I Using in Calculate The Strength Of Hood panel.

SOFTWARE USE SIEMENSE NX 12.0

CALCULATION -

CASE1 BEFORE OPTIMIZATION-

I=moment of inertia

Y= total distance/2

I(MAX.)= 8.54854150e+05[mm^4] , 854854.150mm^4

I(MIN.)=9.971016402e+03[mm^4] , 9971.016402mm^4

Total distance=487.1095

Y= 487.1095/2

Y= 243.554mm

All Values Put In section modulus Equation (defined s(max.)& s(min)values -

S=I/Y

S(max.)= 854854.150mm^4/243.554mm

S(max.)= 3509.916mm^3

S(MIN)= 9971.0164mm^4/243.554mm

S(MIN)=40.939mm^3

CASE 2 AFTER OPTIMAZATION-

The hood inner panel’s curve is offset by 2mm outwards and section inertia analysis is done same as case 1 for a closed curve.

I=moment of inertia

Y= total distance/2

I(MAX.)= 8.580087583e+05[mm^4] , 858008.7583mm^4

I(MIN.)=1.089208233e+04[mm^4] , 10892.08233mm^4

Total distance=487.1095

Y= 487.1095/2

Y= 243.554mm

All Values Put In section modulus Equation (defined s(max.)& s(min)values -

S=I/Y

S(max.)= 858008.7583mm^4/243.554mm

S(max.)= 3522.868mm^3

S(MIN)= 10892.08233mm^4/243.554mm

S(MIN)=44.7214mm^3

DESIGN S(min.) S(max.)
INITIAL DESIGN 3509.916mm^3 40.939mm^3
IMPROVED DESIGN 3522.868mm^3 44.7214mm^3

CONCLUSION-

From the above table we can conclude that with the increase in the sectional area the sectional modulus increase hence the range of bending permissible bending stress increases and increses strength of hood ,which results in a stronger hood design.
