Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Section modules calculation and optimization
Section modules is a geometric property of the cross section used for designing beams and flexural members. It is used to identify how much load can it withstand i.e strength.
Section modules can be calculated by using
Section modules (s) =I/y
I – moment of inertia
Y – distance from the neutral axis to the edge of the section
Case 1- section modulus of hood design
By using section inertia analysis command we can find the section modulus of hood by selecting the intersection line. Moment of inertia M(max) and M(min)are shown and the Minimum moment of inertia is selected to find the modulus.

I = 4.36058e+03mm^4
Y = 488.3463/2
= 244.17315mm
S = I/y
= 4.36058/ 244.17315
= 0.01785mm^3
Case 2 - After modification in design of hood
Inner panel is offset to a distance of 0.5mm outer and join to the outer panel and section modulus is conducted, we can see there is increase the strength i.e section modulus of hood.

I = 6.155986e^03mm^4
Y = 488.3463/2
y = 244.17315mm
S = I/y
= 6.155986/ 244.17315
S = 0.025211mm^3
Conclusion
Thus the section modulus of hood has been improved so the strength of hood has also increased.
