Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION AND OPTIMISATION
OBJECTIVE
To use the Section from the Hood design and calculate the section modulus and optimize the design to improve the section modulus.
SECTION MODULUS
Section modulus is significant in measuring the strength of a member due to its cross-sectional area. If the section modulus is more, then the load-bearing capacity is also more and resistance to bending is also more.
The formula for section modulus is
S = I/y
S = Section Modulus.
I = Moment of Inertia.
y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.
Section modulus of initial hood design

From the above image, we can infer
IMIN = 1.421×104 mm4
Y= 440 mm
S=I/y
S= 1.421×104/440
S=32.295 mm3
The section modulus is 32.295 mm3
Section modulus after increasing the gap between the hood inner panel and the hood outer panel by 1 mm

From the above image, we can infer
IMIN = 1.463×104 mm4
Y= 440 mm
S=I/y
S= 1.463×104/440
S=33.250 mm3
The section modulus is 33.250 mm3
CONCLUSION
From the above results, it is clear that by increasing the gap between the hood outer panel and the hood inner panel, the section modulus increases. Hence, the resistance to the load increases in case of a crash.
