Section Modulus calculation and optimization

SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION OF THE HOOD

  • Section modulus is a gemetric property for a given crossection used in designing flexural members like beams and shafts.
  • It is the ratio of moment of inertia of the beam cross-section about the neutral axis to the distance of extreme fibre from the neutral axis.
  • It is a direct method of measuring the strength of a beam.
  • The beam which has larger section modulus is capable of supporting larger loads.
  • This actually find for small sections.
  • Section modulus, S= I/Y
  • where I- moment of Inertia
  • Y- distance between neutral axis and the extreme end of the fibre.

SECTION ALONG XY-PLANE

measurement of Y is given below

  • Here from the inertia analysis we get 2 values, maximum and minimum value of I.
  • For calculating the section modulus here we only considering the minimum value of the I, because if the section having the minimum section modulus have the less stength.
  • So, if the less stengthened area is capable of our applying load the other sections can manage the load.

Y=888.28 mm

I=14910.3 mm^4

S=I/Y

  =14910.3/888.28

  =16.785 mm^3

S - section modulus (unit mm^3)

Y - Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object (unit mm)

I - Moment of Inertia (unit mm^4)

OPTIMIZATION

By increasing the height of the outer panel to 0.5mm,

Here we can see the minimum and maximum value of moment of inertia is increased

And below shows the value of Y

So here,

I=15246.8 mm^4

Y=888.84 mm

therefore, S=I/Y

                 =15246.8/888.84

                 =17.153 mm^3

Therefore here we can see the change in Moment of Inertia and change in section modulus with increasing the gap between the hood inner panel and outer panel.

So, if we increases the gap between hood inner panel and outer panel the strength will increase
