Section Modulus calculation and optimization

SECTION MODULUS:-

Section modulus is the geometric preperty of the crossection of the structure.it is the directly measured the strenth of our given section(or) structure.

Higher the section modukus if the structure or section more it will be resistive to the bending

section modulus is denoted by Z

where Z=I/Y

here , "I" is the moment of inertia of the given section

"Y" is the distance from neutral axis to extreme fibre of the section

basically section modulus are 2 types

1)Elastic section modulus

2) plastic section modulus

1)ELASTIC SECTION MODULUS:-

It is used for the materials which have elastically under the load

2) PLASTIC SECTION MODULUS:-

It is used for material which have plastic behaviour.

there are two cases in which term moment of inertia is used

=> AREA MOMENT OF INERTIA

=> MASS MOMENT OF INERTIA

AREA MOMENT OF INERTIA:-

Geometric cross sectional property is also known as the second moment of inertia.

MASS MOMENT OF INERTIA:-

Mass moment of inertia or polar moment of inertia has a resistance of a mass to changes in rotational velocity.

APPLICATION OF AREA MOMENT OF INERTIA:-

=> The section modulus &area moment of inertia are closely related as they are both properties of the beams across the sectional area

=> Since the stress is greatest at the fartherst distance from the neutral axis section modulus combines both area moment of inertia and maximum distance from the neutral axis into one term.

=> Section modulus and mass moment of inertia are entirely differnt properties

SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION OF HOOD:

case(i)

Z =I/Y

MOI(Max)=1.534012661e^07[mm^4]

MOI(Min)=1.168236174e^05[mm^4]

we consider the MOI (min)=116682.361[mm^4] while calculating the section modulus.

Y=Total distance/2

Total distance=482.2mm

Y=482.2/2

Y=241.1

Z=116682.361/241.1

Z=483 mm^3

we can improve the section modulus by improving that moment of inertia of the section,How we can achieve that is by increasing the distance of the inner pannel section and or increasing the emboss thickness

here i have increasd the emboss thickness

Case(ii)

Z=I/Y

MOI(Max)=1.536044359e^07[mm^4]

MOI(Min)= 1.25250619e^05[mm^4]

calculating section modulus MOI(MIN) = 125250.6[mm^4]

Z=I/Y

Y=241.1

I=125250.6

Z=125250.6/241.1

Z=519 mm^3

CONCLUTION:-

Here when comparing case (i) &(ii)

=> The section modulus value of case (ii) is greter than case (i)

=> The main purpose of this analysis was to get the inertia of the hood and study of section modulus are improved to with stand the more loads.
