Section Modulus calculation and optimization
AIM:- Using the Section of the Hood design to calculate the section moduls in NX CAD
WHAT IS SECTION MODULING
- It is the ratio of moment of inertia and the distance of the topmost or the bottommost fiber from the neutral axis.
Section Modulus, Z = I/ymax
- It represents the strength of the section.
- Greater the value of Z, greater will be the strength of the section.
- The section modulus depends upon the moment of inertia which again depends not only on the total area of the cross-section but also on the disposition of the area with respect to neutral axis.

the above figure shows the different section have different formulas but we are having a shape of hood which cannot be calculated with formula so here, NX CAD gives the moment of inertia of the figure which we gave .
formula used to calculate the Section Modulus
S = I/y
Where,
S = Section Modulus
I = Moment of Inertia
y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object
HOOD SECTION VIEW

here the distance of y will be 482.9675/2

calculation
S = I/y
Where,
I = 5.594x103 mm4
y = 241.48 mm
s= 23.165 mm3
MODIFIED SECTION oF THRE HOOD.

calculation
S = I/y
Where,
I = 5.829x103 mm4
y = 241.48 mm
s= 24.138 mm3
observation
initial section module s= 23.165 mm3
final section module after modifing s= 24.138 mm3
how much percent strength or section module increase = 4.2003% increase

final value = 24.138
starting value = 23.165
CONCLUSION
SO AFTER INCREASING THE CROSS SECTION AREA OF THE HOOD WE CAN SEE THERE IS INCREASE IN SECTION MODULE OF THE HOOD WHICH MEANS INCREASE IN STRENGTHING OF THE HOOD.
