Section Modulus calculation and optimization
CALCULATE SECTION MODULUS AND OPTIMIZATION OF CAR HOOD:
OBJECTIVE:
The aim of the project is to find the section modulus using the formula S=I/Y of the designed hood and optimize it to get an improved section modulus by making necessary changes.
What is Section Modulus:
Ratio of total moment resisted by the section to the stress in the extreme fibre.
It gives us an idea about how much of load the given structure can take.
If the section modulus increases the moment of resistance increases and hence its load bearing capacity.
Then the value can be used to find out the section modulus using the formula given
S=I/Y
where,
S - Section Modulus
I - Moment of inertia value from the inertia analysis
Y - Distance from Neutral axis to outermost fibre.

The total distance of the hood from one end to another = 485.90 mm
CASE 1:

Minimum moment of inertia = 4.913508720 × 103 mm4
Distance between the neutral axis to the extreme end = (485.9/2) = 242.95 mm
Minimum Moment of Inertia I= 4.913508720 × 103 mm4
For Minimum Moment of Inertia,
S= I/Y = (4.913508720 × 103 mm4) / 242.95 mm
S= 20.22436 mm3
CASE 2:
Minimum moment of inertia = 5.307973984 × 103 mm4
Distance between the neutral axis to the extreme end = (485.9/2) = 242.95 mm
Minimum Moment of Inertia I= 5.307973984 × 103 mm4
For Minimum Moment of Inertia,
S= I/Y = (5.307973984 × 103 mm4) / 242.95 mm
S= 21.84800 mm3
Conclusion:
Thus by increasing the distance between the Inner and outer panel of the Hood assembly by 1 mm, value of section modulus is increased by 1.6236498127 mm3 hence the strength of hood is also increased.
