Section Modulus calculation and optimization
- ABOUT SECTION MODULUS :
Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members. Other geometric properties used in design include area for tension and shear, radius of gyration for compression, and moment of inertia and polar moment of inertia for stiffness. Any relationship between these properties is highly dependent on the shape in question.
Section modulus calculate by the ratio of area moment of inertia to the distance from the nutral axis to the point where the bending normal stress is determind.
- SECTION MODULUS FORMULA -
S = I/Y
where,
S = Section modulus.
I = Moment of inertia.
Y = Distance between nutral axis and the extrem end of the object.
- SECTION MODULUS CALCULATING OF HOOD DESIGN
CASE 1 - Before Optimization.

MOI (MAX) = 1.545345910e+07[mm^4]
MOI (MAX) = 1.5453 x 10^7[mm^4]
MOI (MAX) = 15453000 [mm^4]
MOI (MIN) = 9.5409707210e+04[mm^4]
MOI (MIN) = 9.5409 x 10^4[mm^4]
MOI (MIN) = 95409 [mm^4]
Y = 485..3/2
Y = 242.65mm
We are consider minimum MOI to calculating SECTION MODULUS.
Therefore,
S = I/Y
S = 95409/242.65
S = 393.1959mm^3
CASE 2 - After Optimization.
In this case we increasing the section area of hood by increasing a number of emboss.

MOI (MAX) = 1.554425404e+07[mm^4]
MOI (MAX) = 1.5544 X 10^7 [mm^4]
MOI (MAX) = 15544000 [mm^4]
MOI (MIN) = 1.685146169e+05[mm^4]
MOI (MIN) = 1.6851 X 10^5 [mm^4]
MOI (MIN) = 168510 [mm^4]
Y = 485..3/2
Y = 242.65mm
We are consider minimum MOI to calculating SECTION MODULUS.
Therefore,
S = I/Y
S = 168510/242.65
S = 694.4570mm^3
- CONCLUSION -
Hence when comparing case 1 and case 2,
1) Section modulus value in case 2 increase whene section area increase.
2) As we increase section area, moment of inertia and section modulus increase, which means strength and load carring capacity of material also increase.
