Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS:
Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members. Other geometric properties used in design include area for tension and shear, radius of gyration for compression, and moment of inertia and polar moment of inertia for stiffness.
S = I/y
Where,
S = Section Modulus
I = Moment of Inertia
y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object
lets assume.,
Stainless steel AISI 302 – cold-rolled
yeild strength = 520 MPa
orginal data:

Imax=5.0078x10^6 mm^4
y=480mm
S=I/Y
S=10432.91666mm^3
lets try redusing theoffset value between the inner and outer pannel by 1mm inward:

Imax=4.9968x10^6 mm^4
y=480mm
S=I/Y
S=10410mm^3
lets try incresing the offset value by 1mm:

Imax=4.9905x10^6 mm^4
y=480mm
S=I/Y
S=10396.875mm^3
Observations. shows that the sectionmodulus without additional offset provided a higher value when compaired to offset value.no significant change in strength by changing gap between inner and outer pannel.
