Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section Modulus and optimization Hood design

Section Modulus -

Section modulus is a ratio of moment inertia about neutral axis(MOI) and distance between the neutral axis and outermost edge of fiber/beam/elements.

Section modulus is a geometric property used for cross section to calculate strength of beam or component.

Representation of section modulus -

S = I/Y

I = moment of inertia (mm^4)

Y = Distance between neutral axis and outer edge.(mm)

UNIT - MM^3

PROCEDURE -

  • Calculate the moment of inertia of given cross section about neutral axis.
  • Calculate the (Y) from neutral axis.
  • Find the section modulus by using standard formula.

In this case we are calculating the section modulus of Hood with two cross section and optimizing it according to result value.

From the given cross section we get Y value from neutral axis with the help of UG NX software.

Y = 246.105 mm

Section modulus 1

For the first section we use the original design of hood without any change inner panal geometry.With help og UG Nx software we find the Moment of inertia as shown in the picture.

MOImin. = 7.5340440211*10^3 mm^4

MOI max. =8.221316176*10^5 mm^4

For the section modulus we take the minimum MOI,so we get -

S = I min./Y

S = 30.61 mm^3

Section modulus 2

To check the better strength we change the offset the inner panel geometry with 0.5 mm outword means the gap between outer and inner panal is reduced.So with new cross section we obtain the new moment of inertia and anylize the change in section modulus.

MOI min.= 7.744312747*10^3 mm^4

MOI max.= 8.221316176*10^5 mm^4

For the section modulus we take the minimum MOI,so we get -

S = I min./Y

S = 31.467 mm^3

From above two result value we can say that section modulus no.2 having better strength than section modulus 1.

So we modify the hood design according to obtained result of section modulus.
