Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION AND OPTIMIZATION
Objective:
To find the section modulus of the hood and to optimize the section modulus to improve the load bearing capacity.
Section modulus:
Section modulus of the hood or any component is a direct measure of the strength of the component. When the section modulus of the component is high then the load bearing capacity of the component is also high.
The section modulus is calculated with the extreme fibres of the section. The formula for calculating the section modulus is shown below.
Section modulus Z=I/Y
Here, Z, is the section modulus in (mm^3)
I, is the moment of inertia in (mm^4)
Y, is the neutral axis in mm
Here the neutral fibre distance can be calculated by measuring the distance between the extreme two points of the hood and dividing it by 2.
Here the measured value is 879.580 therefore Y=879.580/2,
Y=439.79mm.
The moment inertia value for the created section modulus is shown in the below image

From the above image the value of the Moment of inertia is shown, but here we have to use the minimum value, so here minimum moment of inertia
I=1.36706386 x 10^4 mm^4
Therefore Section modulus Z=13670.6386/439.79
Z= 31.08446 mm^3.
Here the section modulus value is calculated but if there is a chance to improve the section modulus we can also do it, here we are offsetting the outer curve of the inner panel and the new moment of inertia is shown in the below image.

From the above image the value of the Moment of inertia is shown, but here we have to use the minimum value, so here minimum moment of inertia
I=2.067141895x10^4 mm^4
Therefore Section modulus Z=20671.41895/439.79
Z= 47.002930 mm^3.
Conclusion:
- The section modulus for the hood is calculated and optimization is also done.
- The value of section modulus before optimization is Z=31.08446mm^3
- The value of section modulus after optimization is Z=47.002930mm^3.
- Therefore the load bearing capacity of the hood is also increased.
