Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Report on Section Modulus Calculation of Hood

Objective:

To calculate the section modulus of the hood and optimize the its design to see the difference in its bending strength.The higher the section modulus of the hood the more resistant it becomes to bending.

Section Modulus:

  • Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members.
  • In design Area for tension and shear, radius of gyration for compression, and moment of inertia and polar moment of inertia for stiffness.
  • There are two types of section moduli, the elastic section modulus and the plastic section modulus.

What is Section Modulus:

  • Ratio of total moment resisted by the section to the stress in extreme fibre.
  • It gives us an idea about how much of load the given structure can take.
  • If the section modulus increases the moment of resistance increases and hence its laod bearing capacity.

Section modulus Formula

S = I/y

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

The below image shows the Intial Section Modulus:

The Observed Initial Moment of Inertia: (Along XY Plane)

M1: 1.949*10^-6 m^4 (Least Value)

M2: 7.011*10^-4 M^4 (Higher Value)

Convert to mm:(*10^12)

M1: 1.949*10^3 mm^4

M2: 7.011*10^5 mm^4

Section Modulus: (Initial Stage)

S = I/y

=1949000/441.8445

S=4411.054 mm^3

Hood Design Optimization :

The below image is modification done on the Section Modulus of the Hood.

The Observed Initial Moment of Inertia: (Along XY Plane)

M1: 2.049*10^-6 m^4 (Least Value)

M2: 7.316*10^-4 M^4 (Higher Value)

Convert to mm:(*10^12)

M1: 2.049*10^3 mm^4

M2: 7.316*10^5 mm^4

Section Modulus: (Optimization Stage)

S = I/y

=2049000/441.8445

S=4637.37 mm^3

The below table shows the Section Modulus (Before & After)

S.No Section Modulus (Before) Section Modulus (After)
1 4411.054 mm^3 4637.37 mm^3

Conclusion:

We can see the difference in Moment of Inertia and the change in section modulus when the change of design is applied.
