Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section Modulus of Hood Design

Section Modulus:

The section modulus is the geometric property of a cross-section taken along a plane used to calculate the strength of the part.

The more the value of the section modulus more strengthens the part is. So it is very important to improve the section inertia of the cross-section.

Section Modulus, S = I / y

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

Inertia Analysis on hood design:

Y = 462/2 = 231 mm.

Inertia of the cross section = 1.376 x 10^7 mm^4

Section Modulus = I/Y = 1.376 x 10^7 mm^4/ 231 mm = 5.956 x 10^7 mm^3

Improvements:

Inertia of the cross-section = 1.431 x 10^7 mm^4

Section Modulus = I/Y = 1.431 x 10^7 mm^4/ 231 mm = 6.194 x 10^7 mm^3

By changing the direction of embosses, there is an increase in the area and which improves the value of section modulus.

This value can be further improved by improving the width of the embosses and the number of embossing.
