Section Modulus calculation and optimization

AIM

Use the Section from your Hood design and calculate the section modulus using the formula S = I/y

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

SECTION MODULUS

section modulus is use for the analysis purpose. To measure the strength of the hood so that only we use the section modulus

Section Modulus is also referred to as the Polar Modulus or the Torsional Sectional Modulus. It is denoted by Z .

Section Modulus is the geometric property of the given cross-section of any shaft or beam structures.

It is the direct measure of the strength of the shaft section or the beam section. Higher the section modulus of a structure, the more the resistive it becomes to
bending.

The second moment of area is also known as the moment of inertia of a shape. It is directly related to the area of material in the
cross-section and the displacement of that area from the centroid.

Once the centroid is located, the more important structural properties of the shape can be calculated.

The axis that determines the centroid is also known as the neutral axis (N/A).The second moment of area is a measure of the 'efficiency' of a shape to resist bending caused by loading. A beam tends to change
its shape when loaded. The second moment of area is a measure of a shape's resistance to change.

PROCEDURE

So here we are going to calculate the section modulus for the Hood Assembly upto two iterations and can analyze one with more
section modulus.Here we take the section of Hood assembly

take the hood asembly of inner and outer panel of hood.And select the asembly after that go to tool bar and select the

generate CAT part show in the figure

And the new page is open and then take the intersection with midplane and show in the figure

After that fill the intersection with the use of fill tool. and then the part is fill after that use the measure inertia and select the fiil intersection and measure interia tool is open and shows the measurement and shown in the figure

THIS IS MEASURING  INDEX OF INERTIA

and open the new sketch foe measuring the length of the diagram and divide by 2  that is our Y

After that calculate the formula for  section modulus

caculation 1

y=482.422/2

  =241.211

I(min)=6.246*10^5 mm^4

I(max)=1.464*10^8mm^4

S=I/Y

S=146400000 /241.211

S=606937.495

caculation 2

y=482.422/2

  =241.211

I(min)=6.894*10^5  (mm^4)

I(max)=1.557*10^8 (mm^4)

S=I/Y

S=155700000 /241.211

S=645495.626

 CONCLUSION :

Therefore the value of section modulus is increased from 606937.495 mm^4 to 645495.626×10 mm^4 with 1mm offset of the inner panel to outside.

By the result of this we can say that increase in the cross sectional area of the section, the minimum load
taking capacity of the part will be increased.
