Section Modulus calculation and optimization

OBJECTIVE

  • Here we need to calculate the Section Modulus of HOOD by S=I/Y formula & need to optimize the previous hood design to get improved design.

Section Modulus

  • It is the ratio of the total moment of Inertia registered by the section to the stress in extreme Fibre.
  • It provides an Idea about the Load carrying capacity of the Perticular section.
  • So as the Section Modulus increases the Moment of inertia increases and that leads to increase the strength of the Section.

Processes

The Minimum consideration that we need to take While performing the Section Modulus is it should be a closed surface.

If we going to consider the value of MOI(max) {I}-------4.803009760*10^6

MOI(min){I}---------1.408213158*10^4

Case-1(Original Designed Section)

These value are taken for the Original design of the Hood.

S=I/Y

S-section Modulus

I-Moment of Inertia

Y-Distance of Neutral Axis to one end of Section

Yield Moment=Yield strength of the Material XX Section Modulus

Calculations

S(max)=`frac{4.803009760 xx10^6}{440}`

S=10915.9312727mm3

My=10915.9312727xx515 [where My=Yield Moment]

= 5621704.60545mm4

S(min)= `frac{1.408213158 xx10^4}{440}`

S=32mm4

My=32.0048445xx515

=16482.4949175mm4

Case-2(Optimized Design of Hood)

Optimization to be done in the means of Strength. From the Above Example we can understand that as the Section Modulus is directly propertional to the Moment of Inertia so more the Section Modulus is the more the Strength.

Calculations

S(max)=`frac{5.129977142 xx10^6}{440}`

S=11659.0389591mm3

My=11659.0389591xx515

=6004405.06393mm4

S(min)=`frac{2.235505098 xx10^4}{440}`

S=50.8069340455mm3

My=50.8069340455xx515

=26165.5710334mm4

Conclusion

So in above condition we can clearly observe that the section modulus increases as we increased the Moment Of Inertia of that perticular section(Hood).We Increased the Moment Of Inertia by increasing the GAP BETWEEN the Hood Inner Panel to Outer Panel,this is because the Moment Of Inertia increases as we increase the Cross-Section of the Hood.
