Section Modulus calculation and optimization
AIM :
To Calculate the section modulus of the designed hood for analyzing its strength and to see the difference in the bending strength of the hood.
SECTION MODULUS :
It is termed as the ratio of the second moment of inertia and distance from axis to the extreme fiber. Also, it is the measure of the strength of a given member. The stress in the outermost section of the beam is computed with the help of section modulus.
S = I/Y
Where,
- S = Section Modulus.
- I = Moment of Inertia.
- y = Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.
PART A : (For the hood design the moment of inertia values)

Maximum moment of inertia = 4.744928545e + 06[mm^4]
Minimum moment of inertia = 1.605067311e + 04[mm^4]
Principal Directions :
Max : (0.000046276, 0.985080969, 0.1725091495)
Min : (0.999999999, -0.000043682, -0.000018861)
Section Length : 3.624323074e + 03[mm]
Section Area : 74.485964321[mm^2]
The total distance of the hood Y = 880 mm
Distance between the neutral axis to the extreme end = (880/2) = 440 mm
To find section modulus of HOOD section, we have to calculate for Minimum moment of inertia...
S = 1.605 * 10^4/440
S = 36.477 mm^3
PART B (For the hood design the moment of inertia values after improvising the section offsetting inwards about 1mm)

Maximum moment of inertia = 4.785569293e + 06[mm^4]
Minimum moment of inertia = 1.732726208e + 04[mm^4]
Principal Directions :
Max : (-0.000003320, 0.985080972, 0.172091486)
Min : (1.000000000, 0.000005174, -0.000010326)
Section Length : 3.650158854e + 03[mm]
Section Area : 72.989727183[mm^2]
The total distance of the hood Y = 880 mm
Distance between the neutral axis to the extreme end = (880/2) = 440 mm
To find section modulus of HOOD section, we have to calculate for Minimum moment of inertia...
S = 1.7327 * 10^4/440
S = 39.379 mm^3
CONCLUSION :
The difference can be seen in the moment of inertia and the change in the section modulus can be seen by the change in the design.
