Section Modulus calculation and optimization

AIM:-

To calculate the section modulus for the previously designed hood and to come up with the new section by optimized and altered the design. That new section for increasing section modulus of the model.

Theory:-

Use the section from the hood assembly design take the drawing sketch of the outer most line of the hood outer panel and inner most line of the hood inner panel. Calculate the section modulus using the formula S=I/Y

S= Section modulus

I= Moment of inertia(minimum moment of inertia)

Y=distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.

Create new section to improve the section modulus of the previous section.

Section modulus:-

Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members. Other geometric properties used in design include area for tension and shear, radius of gyration for compression, and moment of inertia and polar moment of inertia for stiffness. Any relationship between these properties is highly dependent on the shape in question. Equation for the section modulus of common shapes are given below. There are two S=I/Y, where is the second moment of inertia or area moment of inertia.

Calculation:

Section 1:

This section was directly taken from the hood model which was previously designed.

I= 1480554.816mm^4

Y=441.08mm

S=I/Y= 3,356.658mm^3

Section 2:

This has an improved moment of inertia.

Things that were done are

1.Embosses on inner panel were 0.5mm increased more towards engine room.

I=1494455.174mm^4

Y=441.08mm

S= I/Y = 3,388.172mm^3

Conclusion:-

Calculated the section modulus for the previously designed hood and the new section has been created by altering them and we got the higher value of section modulus hence the strength also increased. Hence, it can be concluded that the mechanical properties of section 2 proves that it’s better than section 1.
