Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Section Modulus Calculation and Optimization
OBJECTIVE:
To use the section of the Hood Design & calc the section modulus and also to come up with a new section of improved section modulus of the previous section.
SECTION MODULUS:
is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members.In simple words it is the study which infers how much bending a body can resist.The higher our section modulus value the more it will resist bending.
S = I/y
S = Section Modulus
I = Moment of Inertia
y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.
CASE 1:
Here we calculate the section modulus for the currently designed hood,

Here I= 5.69×103 mm4.
The distance between both extreme ends of the object.

To obtain Y we divide the total length by 2.
So we get,
Y=485.7/2=242.85 mm
Section Modulus,S=I/Y
5.69×103/242.85
S=23.43 mm3
CASE 2:
To improvise the moment of inertia,the bottom section is offsetted by 0.5 mm.
Here I=5.91×103 mm4
Y=242.85 mm
Section Modulus,S=I/Y
5.91×103/242.85
S=24.34 mm3
CONCLUSION:
We can clearly notice that when the section of an object increases the section modulus increases relatively.This shows that when a section of an object increases it's ability to resist bending increases.
