Section Modulus calculation and optimization
INTRODUCTION:
Section modulus is a direct measure of the strength of any sectional area of an object about a reference axis (neutral axis).
This strength can measure directly from the Section modulus formula and is defined by the below formula.
Section modulus is represented with a symbol of 'S'.
S=I/Y
where 'I ‘moment of inertia
'Y' is the distance from the reference line (neutral axis) to one of the extreme ends of an object.
- Moment of inertia is nothing but offering resistance against of moment, bending or twisting, i.e., if we applied any external load on the body, how much resistance its offering to tend to deform.
- So, the higher the value of the moment of inertia, have higher the resistance to deform under a certain load, hence we can say that moment of inertia is directly proportional to the strength of the material, and the strength of the material can be calculated with the help of section modulus.
Here we take the minimum value of the moment of inertia as it is the threshold value where the deformation starts.

Minimum Moment of inertia Imin= 1.4589*10^4 mm^4

The total length of the section is given by 'Y'= 875.2184mm.
So the length from the neutral axis 'y' is given by Y/2 which is equal to 437.609mm.
So, the section modulus is 'S' is given by
(1.4589*10^4) / (437.609)
=33.33mm^3
Here we make changes in the hood panel in order to get a greater section modulus. we offset the inner panel of the hood by 1.25mm and again we calculate the section inertia analysis.

The above are the values after the change in the values when the section is altered.
The minimum moment of inertia is given by 1.50974*10^4 mm^4
Therefore, the section modulus 'S' is given by
(1.50974*10^4) / (437.609)
= 34.49mm^3
CONCLUSION: The strength of the material is directly proportional to the moment of inertia, hence an increase in the sectional area there is has increased the overall mass of an object, hence have increased in strength.
