Section Modulus calculation and optimization

What is section modulus?

  • Ratio of the total moment resisted by the section to the stress in extreme fibre
  • It gives us an idea about how much of load the given structure can take
  • If the section modulus increases the moment of resistance increases and hence it's load bearing Capacity

How to calculate

Section modulus is an direct measure of strength of any sectional area of an object about the reference Axis.

Strength is nothing but capable of supporting greater loads so higher the strength of has a high capable of getting greater loads.

Thus strength can be measured directly from section modulus formula and defined by below formula

Section modulus represented with system S.

S = I/Y

Where I moment of inertia.

'Y' is the distance from the reference line (neutral axis) to over of the extreme end of an object.

  • Moment of inertia is nothing but offering resistance against of Moment bending or twisting.i.r If we applied any external load on the body how much resistance tend to deform.
  • So, higher the value of moment of inertia have higher resistance to deform under certain load hence we can say that we have moment of inertia directly proportional to the strength of the material
  • if we carry the natural axis towards positive or negitive side the overall strength of the body will decrease nectar when neutral axis line lies on the middle of section only have higher strength at particular point. So here'Y' value was install proportional to the section modulus.
  • In this challenge we will be taking the section of our designed hood for our calculation
  • We will take the section along the length of the Hood and find the moment of inertia using section inertia analysis tool in nxcad.

First analyse the base section

SECTION#:1
MOI(MAX): 4.770823502e+06(mm^4)
MOI(Min): 1.594418967e+04(mm^4)
H=880.6 ,y=H/2
Distance of Extreme Layer fron Neutral Axis (y)=880.6/2=440.3mm
section modulus S=I/Y
for first analysis of min MOI,S=Imin/y
S=15944.18967/440.3
=36.21(mm^3)
from the section#:1,using minimum Moment of inertia and extreme distance of layer.we got the section modulus(S) value is 36.21(mm^3)

SECTION#:2

In this section modulus to increase of inner panel distance from previous section#:1 offset of the inner panel 1mm.

MOI(MAX): 4.756189448e+06(mm^4)
MOI(Min): 1.666813338e+04(mm^4)
H=880.6 ,y=H/2
Distance of Extreme Layer fron Neutral Axis (y)=880.6/2=440.3mm
section modulus S=I/Y
for first analysis of min MOI,S=Imin/y
S=16668.13338/440.3
=37.85(mm^3)

from the section#:2,using minimum Moment of inertia and extreme distance of layer.we got the section modulus(S) value is 37.85(mm^3)

CONCLUSION:

The stregth of the material is directly proportional to the moment of inertia.We tried to increase the moment of Inertia.it is observed that increase the gap between inner panel and outer panel has resulted to improve the section modulus.hence it is best to add more geometric features to the master section to increase the stiffness
