Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section Modulus calculation and optimization of the hood

Objective: Use the Section from your Hood design and calculate the section modulus using the formula

S = I/y

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

Y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

Come up with a new section that has improved the section modulus of the previous section and mention what change you made that has increased the strength.

Consider stainless steel AISI 302 – cold-rolled – y = 520 MPa

Solution: - Section modulus indicates the strength of the material if the larger section modulus the stronger material will be.

I took the section of hood that I design, prepared the sketch for section inertia analysis, sketch exacted outside of the outer panel and inside of the inner panel, to do the section modulus analysis required a closed profile, so I joined the inner and outer panel profile with the curve.

The below-Shown image is a modulus of the section that I designed.

S=I/Y

I = Moment of Inertia

Y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

For Stainless steel AISI 302 – cold-rolled – y = 520 MPa

From the formula, we can see that Section modulus is directly proportional to its moment of inertia

Moment of inertia is given as the "Sum of the product of mass" of Each Particle with "square of its distance from the axis of the rotation.

The minimum value is the point at which the failure begins and then the max value is where the component fails.

To improve the moment of inertia we have to increase the gap between the outer and inner panel.

Distance between inner and outer increased by 5 mm and slightly changed the embossed definition which gives the above-improved result.

So if the gap is increased between the two then the strength of the component will be increased.
