Section Modulus calculation and optimization
( presentation ppt is in the uploaded folder )
The Section Modulus is a geometric property of a cross-sectional shape that measures its resistance to bending or flexure. It is defined as the ratio of the Moment of Inertia (I) of the cross-sectional shape to the distance (y) between the neutral axis and the farthest point of the section.
In other words, the Section Modulus (S) represents the shape's ability to resist bending stress due to external loads. The greater the value of S, the greater the bending strength of the shape. Section modulus is used in the design of beams, columns, and other structural members.

The formula S=I/y shows that section modulus is directly proportional to the moment of inertia, and inversely proportional to the distance y. Therefore, increasing the moment of inertia or decreasing the distance y will result in an increase in the section modulus, which in turn increases the bending strength of the shape.
The unit of section modulus is length cubed (e.g., mm3 or in3), as it is a measure of the shape's capacity to resist bending stresses in units of force per unit length squared.
First Design Study:
The Intersection of the design was taken and then section Inertia Analysis was done-

S=I/Y
Here,
S = Section modulus
I= Moment of Inertia (Unit mm 4)
Y= Distance from Neutral axis to the extreme end (unit mm)
The Unit of a “section modulus” is (mm3)
Moment of inertia(max) = 8.985135846×10^7×mm^4
Moment of inertia(min) = 2.513775043×10^5×mm^4

Y=880.5282/2=440.2641 mm
S=I/Y
S= 2.513775043×10^5/440.2641 = 570.969798mm^3
Hood Design Optimization:
By increasing the depth of the inner panel by 0.5 mm,

S=I/Y
Here,
S = Section modulus
I= Moment of Inertia (Unit mm 4)
Y= Distance from Neutral axis to the extreme end (unit mm)
The Unit of a “section modulus” is (mm3)
Moment of inertia(max) = 1.332866481×10^8×mm^4
Moment of inertia(min) = 3.760495411×10^5×mm^4

Y=880.5282/2=440.2641 mm
S=I/Y
S= 3.760495411×10^5/440.2641 = 854.145367mm^3
