Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS :
- In general terms it refers to the strength of the object/part.
- The section modulus of the part increases it also increases the momentum of resistance of the part / object. So in order to increase te strength of a part we need to increase the section modulus.
- Formula to calculate section modulus:
S = I / y
whereas , S - Section modulus
I - Moment of inertia
y - distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object
- Basicaly the moment of inertia is defined as the sum of product of the mass and square of the turning radius of the part. here in cad we calculate the moment of inertia as the area of te required cross section .
STUDY ON HOOD SECTION MODULUS :
For calculating the section modulus we need the outer portion of the inner and outer hood pannel. then after getting the selected closed section , we use measure inertia command in catiav5. after getting the (MOI) I value, then we have to find the distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the part. here we take the full length of the cross sectional area and take half of it and consider to be the y value,
| Calculus of the parental section |
Moment of Inertia I = 1.938e-006 m4 = 1.938 x 10^6 mm4 |
Distance y = 477.988/2 = 238.994 mm |
Section modulus S = I/y = (1.938 x 10^6) / 238.994 = 8108.99 mm3 |
| Calculus of the modified section |
Moment of Inertia I = 1.942e-006 m = 1.942 x 10^6 mm4 |
Distance y = 477.988/2 = 238.994 mm |
Section modulus S = I/y = (1.942 x 10^6) / 238.994 = 8125.727 mm3 |
| OPTIMIZATION |
As the calculated section modulus for the hood gives the value I = 1.938 x 10^6 mm4 , S = 8108.99 mm3 So for increasing the strength we need to increase the section modulus by increasing its area , for that I created the emboss in the middle portion of the section , so that we can get to increase the section modulus. After increasing the area the value I = 1.942 x 10^6 mm4 , S = 8125.727 mm3 I created the emboss in the cutout region in the middle of the hood, so that we can provide the increase in strength compared to the parental part . |
