Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Section Modulus calculation
section modulus:
Section modulus is a direct measure of the strength of any sectional area about a reference axis. The section modulus is directly proportional to the area moment of inertia of the cross-section. Higher the section modulus more the stiffness. In other words, stiffness can be increased by just improving the geometry without adding the external material. Section modulus is represented with 'S'.
The formula for section modulus is:
S=I/Y(max)
where I = Area moment of inertia
Y(max) = Distance of extreme layer from neutral axis.
Calculation of Section Modulus:
The distance of the extreme layer from the neutral axis is shown below.

Therefore
Y = 477.467/2
= 238.7335mm.
Case 1: With original Section.

Using the formula
S=I/Y
=(9.535 x 10^-007m^4)/238.7335mm
=(9.535 x 10^5mm^4)/238.7335mm
=3993.99mm^3
Case 2: With a small change in the section. Like, offset of inner pannel with 0.5mm.

Applying the formula
S=I/Y
=(9.984 x 10^-7m^4)/238.7335mm
=(9.984 x 10^5mm^4)/238.7335mm
=4182.07mm^3
Result & Conclusion:
Case 1: 3993.99mm^3
Case 2: 4182.07mm^3
As the distance between the hood inner and outer panel is increased by 0.5mm the moment of inertia has been increased as so the strength also increases.
