Section Modulus calculation and optimization

SECTION MODULUS CALUCULATION AND OPTIMIZATION :

Aim's of the challange -

To calculate the section modulus of the previously designed hood for analyzing its strength and also optimizing the design to see the difference in the bending strength of the hood. Higher the section modulus of a structure, the more the resistive it becomes to bending.

Section modules -

Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members, it is also referred to as the Polar Modulus or the Torsional Sectional Modulus.

Section modulus is the ratio of bending to the farthest fiber from neutral axis, or it is the measure of the strength of the beam.Ratio of Area Moment of Inertia to the Distance from the Neutral Axis to the Point where the Bending Normal Stress is determined.

Section modulus (S) = I/Y

I = Moment of inertia of structure.

Y = Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.

TYPES OF SECTION MODULAS :

1 ELASTIC SECTION MODULAS

The elastic section modulus assumes the section remains elastic. Elastic modulus is the steel modulus based on the stress strain curve before yielding.

2 PLASTIC SECTION MODULAS

The plastic section modulus assumes the entire section yields.The plastic modulus is after yielding. plastic section modulus, elastic section modulus.

FOR HOOD DESIGN :

 IN CASE 1 :

MOI (max) :4.811420405e+06[mm^4]

MOI (min)  :1.495783960e+04[mm^4]

Y =  897.695/2 = 448.847

S =  I/Y

S = 1.495783960X 10^3/448.847

  using Minimum Moment of Inertia and extreme distance of layer, we got the section modulus(S) value is    =3.33250296872mm^3

IN CASE 2

In order to increase the resistance to bending of HOOD and i have made some of the changes in the mastersections of the hood , We have to make an improvement in section modulus of HOOD

MOI (max) :5.045355844e+06[mm^4]

MOI (min)  :1.613545216e+04[mm^4]

Y =  897.695/2 = 448.847

S =  I/Y

S =  1.613545216X 10^3/448.847

   using Minimum Moment of Inertia and extreme distance of layer, we got the section modulus(S) value is   =3.59486688337 mm^3

Conclusion:

Resulting by comparing case 1 & case 2,

  1. The section modulus value of case 2 is higher than the case 1
  2. As we increase the section area, the moment of inertia & section modulus increase which means strength and load material also increase. Which the moment of inertia directly proportional to the strength of the material.
