Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Aim-
To calculate section modulus of hood and optimize the design to improve the section modulus.
Section modulus:-
It is the ratio of moment of inertia of a section about the neutral axis to the distance of outermost layer from the neutral axis.
It gives an idea about how much of load the given structure can take.
As section modulus increases the moment of resistance also increases.
The formula of section modulus is given by,
Z=I / Ymax
Its unit is (mm^3)
Where,
Z - Section Modulus
I - Moment of inertia (mm^4)
Y - Distance between neutral axes and outermost fiber (mm)

I min - 6.002x 10^5 mm4
I max - 1.445x 10^8 mm4
Y = Total length / 2
= 483.31/2
= 241.65 mm
section modulus for min. = 6.002x 10^5 / 241.65
= 2.4837 x 10^3 mm3
section modulus for max. = 1.445x 10^8 / 241.65
= 5.97972 x 10^5 mm3
Optimized Design:-
To increase the section modulus we have to increase cross sectional area

I min - 6.325x 10^5 mm4
I max - 1.495x 10^8 mm4
Y = Total length / 2
= 483.31/2
= 241.65 mm
section modulus for min. = 6.325x 10^5 / 241.65
= 2.6174 x 10^3 mm3
section modulus for max. = 1.495x 10^8 / 241.65
= 6.18663 x 10^5 mm3
Conclusion
Strength of material is directly proportional to the moment of interia, thus increasing the sectional area increases strength of component.
Thus sectional modulus for hood design is calculated and optimized design is also done to increase the section modulus of the hood.
