Section Modulus calculation and optimization

SECTION MODULUS:

Section Modulus is the geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members. Other geometric properties used in design include area for tension, radius of gyration for compression, and moment of inertia for stiffness. Any relationship between these properties is highly dependent on the shape. Equations for the section moduli of common shapes are given below. There are two types of section moduli, the elastic section modulus (S) & the plastic section moduluz (Z).

For general design, the elastic section modulus is used, applying up to the yield point for most metals & other common materials.

The elastic section modulus is defined as S=I/y

Where,

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

CALCULATION:

CASE 1: Before Optimization

The Hood which was already created is imported and the section inertia analysis is done.

We have to make sure that the curve obtained is a single/closed curve.

MOI (max) = 1.532388017e+07 (mm^4)

MOI (min) = 1.178721989e+05 (mm^4)

As per the section modulus equation,

S = I/Y

I = MOI (min) value is considered

Y = Total distance /2, Total distance = 482.9759mm

Y = 482.9759 / 2

= 241.488 mm

Therefore, S = 117872.1989 mm^4/241.488 mm

S = 488.108 mm^3

CASE 2: After optimization

The hood inner panel’s curve is offset by 0.5mm outwards and section inertia analysis is done same as case 1 for a closed curve.

MOI (max) = 2.554009604e+07 (mm^4)

MOI (min) = 1.965937625e+05 (mm^4)

As per the section modulus equation,

S = I/Y

I = MOI (min) value is considered

Y = Total distance /2, Total distance = 482.9759mm

Y = 482.9759 / 2

= 241.488 mm

Therefore, S = 196593.7625 mm^4/241.488 mm

S = 814.093 mm^3

CASE 2: After optimization-2

Here the additional emboss structure were created to calculated the section modulus.

MOI (max) = 1.544273285e+07 (mm^4)

MOI (min) = 1.421971702e+05 (mm^4)

As per the section modulus equation,

S = I/Y

I = MOI (min) value is considered

Y = Total distance /2, Total distance = 482.9759mm

Y = 482.9759 / 2

= 241.488 mm

Therefore, S = 142197.1702 mm^4/241.488 mm

S = 588.837 mm^3

Conclusion: Section Modulus of Hood of the car was calculated and optimized section modulus with some changes or optimization and found some better results.
