Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Report

SECTION MODULUS

  • Section modulus is a ratio of movement of inertia about neutral axis to distance of extreme fibre/end from neutral axis.
  • It is mostly used in design of beam or any other flexural material
  • It tells about strength of section under bending.
  • There are two type of section modulus
  • 1st - The elastic section modulus and 2nd plastic section modulus.
  • Elastic modulus is the Steel modulus based on stress strain curve before yielding and the plastic modulus is after yielding.
  • It is mostly used in designing of beam or any other flexural materials

Formula

S = I/yWhere,

  • S = Section Modulus
  • I = Moment of Inertia
  • y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

Section modulus calculation

CASE 1

Initial Section modulus for hood.

  • First we will use intersection curve.
  • Now we have to close this curve, using quick trim in sketch.

CALCULATIONS

  • Total length = 898 mm
  • Therefore Y= 449mm
  • MOI(max) =5.169075506 X 10^6 mm^4
  • MOI(min) =1.60900064 X 10^4 mm^4

S =1.60900064 X 10^4/449

=35.835 mm^3.

Case 2

Increasing the distances between inner and Outer panel by 0.5 mm.

CALCULATIONS

  • Total length = 898 mm
  • Therefore Y= 449mm
  • MOI(max) =5.159741753 X 10^6 mm^4
  • MOI(min) =1.627957957 X 10^4 mm^4

S=1.627957957 X 10^4/449

=36.2574155234mm^3.

CASE 3RD

Increasing the distances between inner and Outer panel by 2 mm

CALCULATIONS

  • Total length = 898 mm
  • Therefore Y= 449mm
  • MOI(max) =5.161991024 X 10^6 mm^4
  • MOI(min) =1.699015049 X 10^4 mm^4

S=1.699015049 X 10^4/449

=37.839 mm^3.

Conclusion-

CASE 1ST - Intial section modulus = 35.835 mm^3.

CASE 2ND - Section Modulus after increasing 0.5mm gap = 36.2574155234mm^3.

CASE 3RD - Section Modulus after increasing 2mm gap =37.839 mm^3.

So , we can conclude that by increasing gap between inner and outer panel,hood strength can be improved.
