Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION AND OPTIMIZATION
Objective : To determine the hood's section modulus and do optimization to raise the section modulus overall.
Section Modulus : The section modulus is a geometric characteristic of the cross section that is utilised in the design of beams and flexural components. It doesn't physically stand for anything.
Formula :
S = I/y
Where,
S = Section Modulus
I = Moment of Inertia
y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.
CALCULATION :
Case 1
The already-created Hood is imported, and the section inertia analysis is carried out. We must confirm that the produced curve is a single, closed curve. So the total length is 877.0175 .

Image 1: Case 1 full screen.

Image 2: case 1 Moment of Inertia.
MOI (max) = 4.789445392e+06 (mm^4)
MOI (min) = 1.376627122e+04 (mm^4)
As per the section modulus equation,
S = I/Y
I = MOI (min) value is considered
Y = Total distance /2, Total distance =877.0175 mm
Y = 877.0175 / 2
= 438.50875 mm
Therefore, S = 1.376627122e+04 (mm^4) /438.50875 mm
S = 0.0313933786 mm
Case 2
The inner panel of the hood has a curve that is 0.5 mm outwardly offset, and the section inertia analysis is performed similarly to case 1 for a closed curve.

Image 3: Case 2 Full Screen.

Image 4: Case 2 Moment of Inertia.
MOI (max) = 4.771202053e+06 (mm^4)
MOI (min) = 1.398522369e+04 (mm^4)
As per section modulus equation,
S = I / Y
I = MOI (min) value is considered
Y = Total distance /2, Total distance =877.0175 mm
Y = 877.0175 / 2
= 438.50875 mm
Therefore, S = 1.398522369e+04 (mm^4) / 438.50875 mm
S = 0.0318926901 mm
Conclusion:
Consequently, when comparing cases 1 and 2,
1. Case 2's section modulus value is greater than Case 1's.
2. As the section area is increased, the moment of inertia and section modulus increase, increasing strength and load capacity.
