Section Modulus calculation and optimization

SECTION MODULAS OF THE  HOOD

Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members. It is also used to calculate the bending stresses in a structural member.

the formula for finding section modulas is

S=I/Y,  where

S= Section modulas

I= moment of inertia of the section about the bending axis

Y= distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the section

we can simply define moment of inertia is the ability to resist bending. for larger moment of inertia the bending will be less.

in neutral axis the top most fibres of the beam are subjected to maximum compression, while the bottom most fibres of the beams are subjected to maximum tension

before optimization:-

we used the tool section inertia analysis to find the maximum and minimum moment of inertia. created a closed section curve for finding these values.

MOI(Max):8.741324864e+05[mm^4]

MOI(Min):5.471223325e+03[mm^4]

TOTAL DISTANCE= 492.6269 mm

Y= TOTAL DISTANCE/2 = 492.6269/2 = 246.31345 mm

S=I/Y = 547122.3325/246.31345 = 2221.2442 mm^3

After optimization :-

the inner panel emboss is slightly adjusted as like increase in cross section.

MOI(Max):8.516071359e+05[mm^4]

MOI(Min):5.478352110e+03[mm^4]

S=I/Y = 547835.2110/246.31345 = 2224.1384 mm^3

CONSLUSION

We can conclude that the moment of inertia and section modulas in increased with respect to the increase of  cross section.

so the strength of respectice section component will also increase.
