REVIT_Analysing the building & Report preparation_Week 8

1) What are HVAC systems ? Why are they essential in modeling of buildings?

ANS:

HVAC system is one of the important component in the modeling of a building. The term HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation and Air conditioning. Heating means to increase the temperature of the input air which flows into the building. Ventilation can be defined as the replacement of the old air present in the room with new fresh air this can also be said as input of fresh air and output of stale and bad air. Air conditioning is a well known term which means that to allow cool air into the building.

HVAC systems have become mandatory in these days as the technology is developed and everyone are used to comforts. With proper HVAC systems we can increse the sustainability and condition of the building environment.

Mainly these HVAC systems are used at malls, offices and large clubs where the population is more. As the population is more more amount of air will be required otherwise it leads to suffocation. If the outside environment temperature is more automatically the cooling system will on and moderates the temperature by allowing more cool fresh air. If the inside temperature is cold the system activates the heating system or heaters, which gradually increses the temperature and makes us feel comfortable. So HVAC systems are important and are essential in modeling a building.

2) From week 7 assignment, based on the building designed use the same revit file to design a HVAC system for each floor to cover the topics included in class.
a. Typical HVAC unit includes Distribution center
b. Collector
c. Ducts
d. Blower
Based on the layout choose appropriate ducts and elevation using property browser and assign the components to appropriate groups to complete modeling of HVAC unit.

Aim : Add HVAC system for each floor created in week 7 and include all the related components like Distribution center, collectors, ducts and blowers.

Tools Used : Mechanical template, Collaborate tool, Manage links, Specify coordinates, Acquired coordinates, Air terminals, Supply diffusers, Return diffusers, Duct, Air handling unit.

Procedure :

  • Open a new mechanical template and save it appropriately.
  • Go to collaborate tab and click on collaborate tool.
  • Next collaborate dialog box appears select within network option and click on ok.
  • Draw the grids and specify the coordinates to 0'-0".

  • Select manage link option and add the architectural model to the mechanical model.
  • Then select acquired coordinates and select the project to set the coordinates same as the host model.
  • Select the system tab and add the supplier and air terminal in each rooms.
  • Select all the elements in the room and click on duct option.
  • Now the HVAC system is setup for the room, repeat the same process for all the floors in the building.

Result : Now we have added the HVAC system for the building including distribution center, collectors, ducts and blowers.

3) Use the add-ins tab to load plug-ins for robot structural analysis to your Revit software.

Ans:

Steps to add ins tab to load plug-ins for robot structural analysis :

  • First check whether the robot structural analysis is enabled or disabled.
  • If not avaliable we have to download it from auto desk store.
  • Click on cart logo on the top of revit.

  • The autodesk store opens, in the search box type structure analysis followed by the respective version /year of the revit software and download the tool.
  • The rotor structural analysis will be reflected in our revit software.

4) Why do we need to assess buildings /analyze while modeling elements ? Does design affect modeling in anyways ?

ANS:

Structure is one of the important component in a building. We cannot imagine or achieve a successful building without a proper structure. The structure framework acts as a skeleton framework to the building. All the loads are being taken by the structural part. The architecture part only plays an important role in the appearance of the buliding.

Structure analysis is very important to a building as to know how much load can the building bare and how long the building can with hold the loads. Before the construction of the building we do not have all the componnets installed in the building like walls and other components, so before we construct the building we have to do the analysis on taking appropriate load values to calculate how much load the structure can afford. After the construction of the building if the structure collapses as it cannot hold the load, then we cannot do anything. We can calcutale the total load, deflections, SFD and BMD.

Structure analysis can also be considered as a demo test or sample test to get a detailed strength of the structure. It is considered better if the structure holds more load than the load capicity calculated in the analysis. So thus we can conclude that it is necessary to do the structure analysis while modeling elements and we can say that the design affects modeling.

5) From the structural model developed in week 6 and 7, export the complete analytical model to robot structural analysis.
a. List your assumptions on what boundary conditions will be realistic for analysis approach
b. Use the design standards to decide what loads must be applied to floorings based on the type of structure decided
c. List the load combinations and include them in analysis model
d. Analyze the building and report the following results
i. Maximum Moment in each floor for all Load Combinations
ii. Maximum Displacement in each floor for all Load combinations
iii. Lateral Displacement in building for all Lateral Load combinations
e. After analysis , do you think you have a better approach or idea in modeling structural members?

Aim : To perform robot structure analysis to the building created in the previous week.

  1. a) Boundary conditions are the conditions which are to be satisfied at all parts of a biundary region where differential conditions have to be solved separetely. For the analysis of the structure we have to have loads, as in oue case we do not have any loads so we have to assume suitable amount of load for the analysis. We have have forces in any direction along X, Y or Z axis. We have to assume that the total moment as 0 and the structure is in equilibrium. We have to place loads at suitable places so as to complete the analysis. The list of parameters required are :
  2. Degree of freedom.
  3. Supports.
  4. Type of load.
  5. Opposing loads.
  1. b) We can apply different types of loads based on our requirements like: Dead load,Live load,Earthquake load,Wind load.
  1. c) The total number of floors in my building are three floors including the ground floor (G+3 floors). 0.9DL +- 1.5 EL, (+-ELx +- 0.3ELy)(+-0.3 ELx +- ELy)(+-ELx +- 0.3 ELy)(+-0.3 ELx +- ELy), these are the four conditions of the x and y coordinates.
  1. d) Analyze the building and report the following results
Maximum Moment in each floor for all Load Combinations
ii. Maximum Displacement in each floor for all Load combinations
iii. Lateral Displacement in building for all Lateral Load combinations

Procedure :

  • First we have to open the struccture template file which was created previously for the week 6 and week 7.
  • In the views we have to select analytic model and go to 3D view.
  • Go to manage tab and select structural settings option.
  • Under that select load combination tool.
  • Now select the amount of load and the type of load we want ot use in the analysis of our building and click ok.
  • Now go to analysis tab and select the type of support we want to use in our structural analysis.
  • Now click analysis and now we can see the load calculations we have applied to our structure.

Result : With the help of the robot structure analysis tool we have calculated the load calculation with the help of the assumed loads we have provided to the software. In this way we cancalculate the structure analysis with any desired loads and check the strength of our designed building.

6) What is energy analysis and why do we need to consider it while modeling in Revit ? How does the factor of sustainability improve the quality of your design ?

Ans:

Energy analysis is a process in which one or more building simulation programs use a properly adjusted BIM model to condut energy. It helps to analyze the movement energy in, out and through the rooms and volumes in the building model. It is a thermodynamic tool used to assess energy systems sustainability. Design seeks to reduce negative impacts on the environment and the health and comfort of the building occupants, therby improving building performance.

We can peform the energy analysis for revit models by using energy analysis for autodesk revit. This add-in ci=onnects the design power of the revit project file to the Autodesk green building studio which acts as a basic constrain for calculation and evaluation.
