Project 2 Thermal modeling of battery pack

Project -

For a 10 cell series lithium-ion battery model, simulate the thermal effects and compare life cycle performance at various temperatures, charge & discharge rates using MATLAB.

Solution:

Component Requirement:

1. Battery (Table-Based)

to activate the SoC and Thermal Property Click on the battery block then this SIMSCAPE BLOCK will appear then go to simscape block >> Block Choice>> instrumented | Show thermal port

Thermal Reference

Temperature Sensor

Convective Heat Transfer

Temperature Sensor

PS-Simulink Converter: to convert some physical quantity to Simulink data

Electrical Reference

Solver Configuration

Goto block

Scope for output waveform

Controlled Current Source for Discharge the battery with some constant discharge current

Signal builder - For giving the signal the controoled current source.

Model of 10 Cell -

Connections - 1. Connect all the battery in series like -ve terminal of one battery to +ve terminal of other battery.

2. 1st battery +ve connect to the current controlled source and other point to -ve of the current sensor. And +ve terminal to the last battery -terminal.

3. In Signal builder we put the UDD signals and connected to the current controlled source and scope.

4. We used integrator, add, mul and constant blocks because of the calculation of the SOC.

We know SOC=1-integration of current/(total battery capacity*3600)

so by using those block we found SOC and connected to scope for output.

5. We used voltage sensor for sense the voltage and connected to scope.

6. Thermal sensor for temperature sense and it connected between conductive heat transfer and soc of battery. Temperature source where we can change or set temperature.

I am Testing the series batteries with the constant discharge current and charge current on different operating temperatures ranging from 300K to 360K.

Result -

1. At 300K temperature -

2. At 330K temperature -

3. At 360K temperature -

We observe from above all the scope result that with the rise in temperature the SoC decreases which means that if we operate the battery at a high temperature than the rated temperature then the battery will discharge fast and the life of the battery will decrease accordingly.
