Project 2 - SiC/IGBT isolated gate driver reference design with thermal diode and sensing FET

Designing the PCB for the described IGBT or SiC isolated gate driver power stage involves several considerations, including layer stackup, trace width calculation, via size determination, and thermal management. Here's how you can address each aspect:

Layer Stackup:

For a complex and high-performance design like the one described, a multilayer PCB with at least four layers is advisable.

The layer stackup may include signal layers, power planes (for bias supplies and DC bus sensing), and ground planes for optimal signal integrity, power distribution, and EMI/RFI shielding.

The stackup should be designed to ensure controlled impedance for critical signal traces and adequate separation between sensitive analog and high-power digital circuits.

Trace Width, Via Size, and Trace Length Calculation:

Use PCB design software or online calculators to determine the appropriate trace width based on the current-carrying capacity, copper thickness, and allowable temperature rise.

Calculate via size based on the current density and thermal requirements to ensure efficient heat dissipation from the component to the inner layers or thermal vias.

Trace length should be kept as short as possible to minimize signal propagation delays and reduce susceptibility to noise and interference.

Avoiding Heating of Components:

Ensure proper thermal management by placing heat-generating components, such as power devices and drivers, on the outer layers of the PCB to facilitate heat dissipation.

Use thermal vias or copper pours connected to a dedicated thermal plane to efficiently conduct heat away from hotspots on the PCB.

Consider adding heat sinks or thermal pads to critical components to enhance thermal dissipation and maintain safe operating temperatures.

Advantages of Multilayer PCB:

Increased Routing Density: Multilayer PCBs offer more routing layers, allowing for denser component placement and complex routing configurations.

Improved Signal Integrity: Separate power and ground planes in multilayer PCBs minimize signal noise, crosstalk, and electromagnetic interference, enhancing signal integrity and reliability.

Enhanced Thermal Management: Additional internal power and ground planes in multilayer PCBs provide better thermal dissipation and heat spreading, reducing the risk of component overheating.

Design Flexibility: Multilayer PCBs offer greater design flexibility, allowing for the integration of multiple functions, signal layers, and power distribution schemes in a compact form factor.

By carefully considering the layer stackup, trace width, via size, and thermal management techniques, you can ensure the reliability, performance, and safety of the PCB design for the described IGBT or SiC isolated gate driver power stage.
