Project 2

Aim: To Design an RMXprt model of BLDC and 3-phase induction motor with the same power rating and to compare the characteristics of the two design models

let us design the RMXprt models of BLDC and induction motor side by side

let us take the predefined primitive models

we can select the models as above as we can see in the left three-phase induction motor and in the right BLDC motor

Now, we are proceeding with the design parameterization

the machine type is initialized as above for both motors, and one main difference is that the BLDC is the outer rotor type

we can observe that the steel type is taken as the same material for both motors

the slot dimensions for both motors are given above

the winding parameters are also provided as above now the stators of the two motors are shown bellow

Now coming to the rotor part for both the motors

the rotors are different in structure as one is the internal rotor for three phase induction motor and another is the outer rotor for the BLDC motor, but the steel type is the same

the rotor of the three-phase induction motor consists of slots as the coils or windings are existed, as BLDC only consists of poles as it is equipped with permanent magnets

the copper bars are sized as above to insert in the slots

the magnet materials for the pole of the BLDC motor are parameterized as above

let us see the designed RMXprt models of three phase induction motor and the BLDC motor as shaft of both motors are nonmagnetized

we can see three phase induction motor on the left side and an outer rotor-type BLDC motor on the right side

let us give the power rating for both motors as same to compare both of them

let us analyze the two motors and compare their characteristics, we are comparing the common parameters below

phase current vs speed

Although we gave the same power rating the BLDC exhibits a high power output and Speed. by observing the above characteristics the BLDC needs low power supply than the three-phase induction motor. the starting currents are high in BLDC at minimum speed the currents are decreased, although the starting currents are minimum in three phase induction motor it was continued until the synchronous speed then decreased

efficiency vs speed

the efficiency is high in BLDC when compared to three phase induction motor, the efficiency is maximum only at the rated speed in an induction motor. the BLDC motor exhibits high-efficiency rate until the maximum region of the operating area

output mechanical power vs speed

the output mechanical power is very high in the BLDC motor for the given power rating, as the three-phase induction motor gradually increased

Torque vs speed

the three-phase induction motor exhibits steady-state torque and is proportional to the speed, as in the case of BLDC it is completely different as the speed increases torque decreases

Comment:

for high-speed applications and automotive applications, BLDC is preferred as it exhibits high-speed characteristics at low input power,

for constant Torque applications, industrial applications, and applications where sturdy motors are required, a three-phase induction motor is used

due to its increasing power factor with output power characteristics, the three-phase induction motor is used as one of the methods for power factor compensation by running it on no load

although the efficiency, high output power, and low input power in BLDC the three-phase induction motor is preferred more due to its robustness, and fault tolerance than BLDC, steady state torque, and power factor compensation in industries.

the BLDC motor is the best fit for automotive applications

Ansys vs Matlab/Simulink:

let us design a simple three-phase induction motor model in MATLAB by taking the values from the design sheet of the RMXprt model

let us see the torque vs speed characteristics of the three-phase induction motor in both Ansys and Simulink

we can observe that the ansys gives a better results to understand its behavior as Simulink provides more practical

Conclusion: The RMXprt models of three phase induction motor and the BLDC motor are designed and given the same power input parameters and compared the different characteristics and commented on the results by comparing both of the designed motors and a Simulink model of three phase induction motor is designed using the design sheet of RMXprt model and compared the torque vs speed characteristics of both the models
