Challenge

Project 1 - Impact of Ball on Wall

Objective:

The aim of this challenge is to simulate the impact of a rigid ball on a plate of aluminum alloy NL to find the total deformation of the plate for 3 different velocities of the ball.

Case setup and execution:

First, the Ansys workbench was opened and the explicit dynamics module was opened.

Then the design modeler was opened and the parts were designed by creating the sketch first and then using the extrude option.

Then the Mechanical module was opened.

The parts were assigned the specified materials.

The mesh was generated by giving the body sizing of 20 mm to the ball and 3 mm to the plate. The edge of the plate was divided into 3 divisions.

Then in the Analysis settings, the end time was given as 0.001 seconds. The rest of the settings were unchanged.

The ball was given a velocity of 50 m/s in the negative z direction and the faces of the plate were given fixed support.

For the output, the total deformation was requested. The model was solved.

The module was duplicated and the velocities of the ball were changed to 250m/s and 500 m/s respectively.

Results:

Vel = 50 m/s

Total deformation

Vel = 250 m/s

Total deformation

Vel = 500 m/s

Total deformation

Conclusion:

As can be seen from the first case, the deformation of the plate is between 18-20 mm, and the plate is ruptured in all the 3 cases. The different values of maximum displacement are of ruptured particles flying away. This value increases with the rise in the velocity of the ball, which is expected. Thus the simulation ran successfully. The file is attached with the report.
