Challenge

Project 1

a. Tabulate the fuel economy numbers (kmpl) for UDDS and HWFET cycle. This forms the baseline numbers for comparing with the future hybrid version.
b. Plot the time trace for engine, transmission input, transmission output and wheel speed on one plot.
c. Plot engine torque, engine power, fuel rate and fuel consumption using subplots.
d. Plot accelerator and brake pedal, gear command, vehicle desired and actual speed, vehicle distance using subplots.
e. Plot the engine operating points on the engine fuel map.
f. Write down appropriate brief comments on each of these plots, describing the vehicle behavior throughout the drive cycle.
g. Generate the plots for both drive cycles.

SOLUTION:

Firstly, the model of the conventional vehicle is given in the simulink which consists of a driver, a controller and a power train as given below:

In power train, we need to find out the blocks for engine and vehicle dynamics taking all parameters and formulae into consideration after referring the MATLAB initial script.

ENGINE MODEL:

VEHICLE DYNAMICS:

All the output parameters are connected to the matlab workspace by using TO WORKSPACE block.

After the development of the model, we need to run the matlab processing script.

From the model we can observe that the drive cycle is in track with the velocity parameters as shown below:

From the above plot we can conclude that the model is correct.

Fuel economy numbers (kmpl) for UDDS is 13.63 kmpl

Fuel economy numbers (kmpl) for HWFET is 16.30 kmpl

We also need to plot the engine parameters and vehicle dynamics parameters on to the script.

Given below are the plots for UDDS and HWFET cycles:

UDDS CYCLE:

TIME TRACE FOR VEHICLE DISTANCE AND VELOCITY

TIME TRACE FOR ENGINE FUEL CONSUMPTION, POWER, TORQUE

TIME TRACE FOR SPEED, PEDAL AND GEAR

ENGINE OPERATING POINTS

HWFET CYCLE:

TIME TRACE FOR VEHICLE DISTANCE AND VELOCITY

TIME TRACE FOR ENGINE FUEL CONSUMPTION, POWER, TORQUE

TIME TRACE FOR SPEED, PEDAL AND GEAR

ENGINE OPERATING POINTS
