Introduction to National Building Code and Steps in a Construction project

Challenge Week 5

1. Aim: Identify why are building codes or standards essential for the modeling/efficiency of drawings in Revit.

Procedure: Building Codes or standards are a set of prescribed standards and guidelines/rules for constructing any type of structure. These are based on region wise. Like here in India we use the National Building Code which is a set of prescribed standards and rules for any activity relating to construction within India. This code is essential for the modeling/efficiency of drawings in REVIT because:

a) If we work out the sizes of spaces without referring the NBC we might end up getting a disapproval from the concerned authority which is responsible for such checks that no haphazard construction takes place anywhere which could prove dangerous to the lives of people.

b) Now if we go by the laws since conceptualizing the design we would be able to save time and energy and money since the final design that would come up as per the code will have greater chances to get approval and will also be safer.

c) The code will guide us through various aspects of constructing a safe, durable and functionally efficient structure saving time, money and resources.

2. Aim: From the National Building Code list the groups that will be essential to you when you begin modeling in Autodesk Revit.

Procedure: Following are the groups identified from the NBC that are essential for proper modeling in Revit :

a) Group 1 For development, building planning and related aspects.

b) Group 2 For structural design and related aspects

c) Group 3 For construction related aspects including safety

d) Group 4 For aspects relating to building services

e) Group 5 For aspects relating to Plumbing services including solid waste management

3. Aim: List the five major steps that occur in project cycle. The steps should include from conceptualization of project to maintenance and final stage.

Procedure: The 5 major steps that occur in a project cycle are:

a) Location/siting

b) Conceptualisation and planning

c) Designing and detailing

d) Construction/execution

e) Maintenance and repair

4. Aim: Give examples of different disciplines involved in the construction of a project.

Procedure: To successfully complete a project there is a need for a veriety of disciplines to work together for better cordination and thereby improving the efficiency of each discipline and the overall activities of the project. Some of the various essential disciplines involved in a construction project are:

a) Architect

b) Civil/Electrical/Plumbing Engineer

c) HVAC Engineer

d) Interior Designer

e) Project Manager etc.

5. Aim: How are buildings classified ? Place the following buildings under each category
a. Four unit apartments
b. School with capacity of 1000 students
c. A single unit shop.
d. Multi story Shopping complex
e. Steel machine factory

Procedure:

a. Four unit apartments - Residential
b. School with capacity of 1000 students - Educational
c. A single unit shop - Mercantile/Business
d. Multi story Shopping complex - Mercantile/Business
e. Steel machine factory - Industrial

6. Aim: Distinguish the roles of Design team and Management team.

Procedure:

The Design team is basically a team of expert professionals from various disciplines like architecture, structure, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, etc. which are made to involve from the initiation of the project for proper integration of the various mentioned disciplines for a proper outcome. The design team is responsible for the design development, services integration, structural design development, proper aesthetics, functional spaces, etc.

while

the Management team is basically a group professionals who are responsible for the proper management of the various phases of construction of the project involving every aspect such as procurement of materials, their storage planning, logistics planning, manpower and machine planning as per requirement, etc. Basically they are responsible for proper organised way of construction within the time framework and cost framework predecided along with no compromise with the quality of construction.

7. Aim: Refer to NBC, Identify the modeling requirements for the project ( from week 4).
a. Height Limitations -
b. Area Limitations
c. Room sizing
d. Wall height
e. Thickness based on fire life and safety
f. Passageway requirements

Procedure:

a. Height Limitations - 1.5 times (width of abutting road + front open space)
b. Area Limitations - FAR 2.0
c. Room sizing - 9.5m2 (minimum)
d. Wall height - 2.75m (minimum) for habitable spaces (clear room ht.)
e. Thickness based on fire life and safety - 230mm thk brick masonry wall
f. Passageway requirements - 1500mm minimum

8. Aim: Use these numbers from code book and verify the numbers used in modeling the unit from week 2 to week 4. If the numbers are not reasonable, use the numbers obtained from the code book to create a revision of the mode.

Procedure:

a. The building height is 28' which is below 1.5 times (width of abutting road + front open space)

b. The model has a total covered area of 1680sqft across ground and first floor which is below FAR 2.0

c. Rooms are larger than 9.5smq.

d. Clear heights are more than 2.75mt.

e. Thickness of exterior walls is 230mm (brick masonry) and interior partition walls is 115mm (brick masonry)

f. Passageways are more than 1.5mt width.
