Identification of Cracks
Q1
Aim:- To explain the modes of failure of the images shown

BEAM COLUMN CONNECTION FAILURE
- this type of failure is due to the formation of plastic hinges at the undesirable locations
- this type of failure occurs when the elements are subjected to very high shear force during seismic activity
- plastic hinges should be formed at the end of the beams and not at the beam-column connection
- if these cracks are left unattended will lead to loss of strength and collapse
Q2
AIM:- To define the type of failure in the images shown

- SHEAR COLUMN FAILURE
- this follows the mechanism of the strong beam and weak column
- the buckling of longitudinal reinforcement due to high compressive forces

CONFINEMENT FAILURE OF THE COLUMN
- this is due to the improper formation of plastic hinges
- improper detailing of the longitudinal reinforcement which leads to the failure of compression in concrete

SHORT COLUMN EFFECT
- it is caused due to the influence of partial infill height of the concrete which increases column shear failure and leads to the undesirable mode of deformation
- the shorter columns attract the higher shear force which leads to the deformation or collapse
